Hi....im too confused and tired to plan one more thing so please help. Dad wants to see Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast because the people in his golf club told him it's beautiful. Lol. Unfortunately they only told him this after our flights were booked. So plan is one night in Sorrento, arriving by ferry from Naples then taking public bus from Sorrento down the coast and back. Then either ferry or train to naples. Need nice hotel which will allow us to do easy walking to enjoy Sorrento and then get to bus. Please suggest something. We are going nov1 or 2.
Should I try and just book a tour from Sorrento? Thanks. ( I ran out of energy for planning )
I’d start on booking.com to see what’s available
Your plan is a bit confusing
Are you arriving in Naples this same day you are heading to Sorrento?
Days will be getting shorter and inclement weather may cancel the ferry
Can you give Sorrento 2 nights?
If you want a tour take a look at www.sharedtours.com
Not sure if you could get to Sorrento on time to make their Amalfi tour though
We loved our stay at
Grand Hotel de La Ville

Walking distance from train, bus and town
Fabulous views
You won’t have much time to enjoy Sorrento if you are doing just the 1 night and spending your time driving the coast
All transportation is pokey slow there
Did your dad's friends tell him about the congestion and the lack of transportation infrastructure in that part of Italy? There is no efficient way to get anywhere quickly. This is not like northern Italy when there are ample train lines that run pretty much on time. The roads are narrow and congested. Then it's November, and you can have the weather issues, which can result in the ferries being canceled. We were there this past May and the area is just not fun in the rain- the sky is grey, the water is grey, the visibility is poor.
You don't say where you're coming from. Rome is almost a four hour drive to Sorrento. Using public transportation can take almost as long, from hotel check out to check in.
If you must do the coastline drive, try the shared Mondo tours that RS recommends.
You sound justifiable overwhelmed. I'm sorry you have additional demands placed on you.
Hope it all works out.
I would take the train from Naples to Sorrento. As others mentioned the weather may affect the ferries in November. Once in Sorrento check into your hotel, or just drop your luggage and then hire a private driver to drive you along the Amalfi Coast, stopping in the various towns you decide to visit, the driver will allow you time to shop, eat and walk around. Public transport will take too long, be physically exhausting and with just one full day, not a good use of your time plus the weather may make it miserable to be waiting at a bus station.
Take the train back to Naples.
In Sorrento we loved The Hotel Mignon, an easy walk from the train station, in the middle of town but tucked away so it was really quiet and they have a wonderful breakfast.
Although November is off-season, Sorrento books up well in advance, so you should pick a hotel in a hurry. Where are you flying from, the USA? Is this the entire trip: Home-Naples-Sorrento-Salerno-Naples-Home? I'm asking because Sorrento, while not "remote" is off the beaten track, and the Amalfi Coast (AC) more so. This is not like going to Ostia Antica from Rome. For example, if you're coming from Rome, you want the 1-hour train, not the 3-hour train.
While an 8-hour, ONE-WAY (surcharge maybe) car service will be 300 Euros or more, it is absolutely the right way to see the Amalfi Coast in a single day, off-season. Your driver may even know what's closed, and what to do if it's raining. (Obviously, the day is not negotiable based on weather.) You can decide about the Naples-Sorrento leg later, but note that the Circumvesuviana is a bit crowded and gritty for someone who never uses public transportation at home. (?)
We slept five nights in Sorrento (for daytrips mostly, it's an ideal transit location, including Pompeii and Capri) and hired a round-trip car service for our day on the AC, which worked great. The driver played cards with his pals while we had an hour and a half in Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, and we stopped at three short-time viewpoints. Well worth the money. When he asked us about "the Pottery Shop", we said, "Do they have multiple bathrooms for tourist busses? Great, we'll use those and not shop at all."
You did not ask, "Where to stay in Sorrento?"
I just stayed at hotel Sorrento city in the beginning of August. 2-3 min walk from the train station. Not super fancy but also not too basic. I wrote a trip report that includes details if interested:

Thanks, all. Just booked hotel Sorrento City and I think it will be just what we need. Feeling better already
