I'm planning to stop for a few hours in sorrento (on my way from Naples to Positano). We will have backpacks. Is there a place at the train station, boat dock, or anywhere to store luggage?

I believe that there is staffed left-luggage storage at the Pompei-Scavi stop on the Circumvesuviana train run from Naples to Sorrento. I don't think that there is any at the Sorrento train station or nearby surrounding areas.

At the Sorrento station we were told that they would hold our bags for 5 euros each at the upstairs office/shop/cafe opposite the ticket window. We took them along instead (there is luggage space under the bus if it is crowded but we kept ours with us.)
When you get to the Positano stop, high above the town, you'll be mobbed by taxi drivers who want to charge you lots of euros to get into town, but there is a very regular bus that stops right in front of the little Tabac shop on the corner and the fare is only 1.20 each way ;-)
