Sorrento with a bad back!

Sorrento is on my list of places to visit. Is the general topography something that I can maneuver. I am able to walk for long distances, but have difficulties with stairs. Will I be able to enjoy Sorrento with these limitations?

I too have back problems and found Sorrento quite easily to negotiate. Most of the town is relatively flat but, and it is a big but, the port area is at the base of a high cliff. However, there is a bus that will take you down and back and also there is an elevator from the overlook on Marina Grande or taxis. Well worth a taxi is a visit to Marina Grande the local fishing port and very lively with fish stalls and other shops as well as a couple of good restaurants with great views over the Bay of Naples. We went to Restaurante Defino - one of the best meals we had in Italy. Enjoy Sorrento.

I agree with Lesley. Sorrento is extremely easy to get around. I have a bad back and fibromyalgia and had no problems. On one of our 3 visits there my son had just had his 4th open heart surgery 6 wks before and he had no problems either. Sorrento is wonderful and my favorite place in Italy :)

Just use a good map and guidebook to locate the elevators, info on buses, etc. Otherwise, it could be pretty easy to find yourself on the loooong staircase/ramp down to the water. Those are some steep switchbacks 8^O Watch The Very Uneven Cobblestone Surfaces!!! I've never seen such uneven cobblestones in all of my European travels; they're truly awful! You'll see...;-) But, the sidewalks are flat...

Thank all of you all soooooooo much! I was about to cancel when I read about the 300 steps down to the water. I always feel bad when our travel companions have to leave me somewhere so they can do what they want and should do........and they rush to get back because of "poor little me."

Glad you didn't cancel. As others have stated, you can get the bus to the marina. And tell your friends not to worry about you in Sorrento. Just find a little cafe or gelateria and sit, relax and have a gelato. You will love Sorrento.

The TI office is in Piazza Tasso. Center of the town. The bus stop for bus going down to the ferry is next to TI office. The stair going down to the ferry is next to the bus stop. You can take a bus or taxi from Piazza Tasso down to the ferry in just a few minutes. I do not see any problem at all.
Have a good trip.

The elevator down to the Marina is in the small cliff top park at the Villa Communale the entrance of which is between the Hotel Tramontano and the church of S Francesco. Bear left when you enter the gates. We prefer the nearby TI office in the lobby of the Foreigners Club, it is the original TI place and the staff seem more knowledgeable. If you do go there, walk through to the outdoor terrace for a coffee/drink and one of the best views in Sorrento. To put your mind at rest why not take a "walk" around Sorrento using Google Maps and its "streetview" facility? .
