First time travel to Southern Italy, plan on using Sorrento as a base for day trips. I will not have a car, using trains, buses and boats to explore. Suggestions?
There are over 100 hotels/B&Bs ranging in price in and around Sorrento. If you can give an indication of price and the sort of facilities you would like it would be easier to give you some ideas. Also, at what time of year are you going?
Hoping to stay around 150 euro or lower. Not sure if I should seek something with a view or not.
Check out the Il Nido Hotel, which is operated as a B&B. Stayed there three years ago...I think it was 85 euros a night. Spectacular views, outstanding food. Nothing super fancy, but the hospitality more than makes up for that. It's family run and Dino took extra good care of us. Il Nido runs a shuttle bus to get you into town. There's a bus stop close by that can be used for the Amalfi Coast. Only possible drawback to you would be no pool. But it's a great find and you'll like it!
You did not say when you want to go so am assuming you are not going at height of the season.
If you want to stay out of town, try La Vue D'Or which is a family run hotel with a pool. It is a bit further up the hill than Il Nido, so has the same views, and also provides a regular shuttle.
Our preference is to stay in town these days. We like the greater freedom in not relying on shuttles and public transport to get to and from our accom. It need not be a noisy location. We enjoy changing out of our day clothes after our days out and going out to dine, shop and generally wander around in the evenings. In town look at
Ulysse Deluxe Hostel (a hotel in all but name) is an RS choice - short walk to town centre
Villa Elise Casa Vacanze - with cooking facilities in the rooms which open on to a central courtyard - town centre
Hotel Corso - simple B&B hotel on main street in town.
Hotel Plaza - small modern B&B hotel in town centre.
La Favorita - brand new hotel in town centre - not stayed there but have looked around public areas and it is very smart.
Hotel Belair - simple cliff top hotel on road leading out of town with views and a pool. A bit of a walk but doable.
There are many more, check them out on somewhere like Venere.com where you can sort by price and location. There is often a trade off between the two.
It can be better to book a room without a seaview/balcony in a more expensive hotel (how much time do you want to spend in your bedroom?) to get the right location and use the hotel's terraces etc to enjoy any views eg
Antiche Mura, De la Ville, Settimo Cielo, Continental etc.
Hi
I really recommend Hotel Sorrento City as a great central location. We were there for a week without a car and daytripped everywhere. The hotel is only 2 blocks from the train and bus station and one block from a one euro 5 minute shuttle ride to the port.
We used bus for Amalfi, ferries for naples and capri, and train to Pompeii.
Good breakfast, nice people, abd very clean. Also we really liked a restaurant called D!antonio(I think that was the name-its close to the Piazza and Old men`s club. Sorrento is great and beautiful and fun
Thank you all for such great information. We are going to be in Sorrento early June, then heading back to Rome for a cruise. We really love Italy, but I have to get to my parents home country Norway before I get too old. Thanks again for all the help.
We stayed at the Mignon Mueble in Sorrento and liked it. Modest, clean, easy walk from train station with luggage and very accessible to all the town. No sea vistas, but our little balcony looked onto a highschool classroom (that's a "view", isn't it?) Not fancy but suited us very well. We also made several excursions out of Sorrento, including train to Pompeii, Herc, and a boat to Positano, and the MM was convenient for everything...including gelato runs down to the main drag. Have a great time.
Hotel Il Nido, has a SUPER view, free shuttle van from/to town. Was there in July and very happy with our choice.
check out B&B il Roseto - great reviews on tripadvisor.com
I stayed at Hotel Dania...it is a little outside of town (about 2km) but was easy to get to and from the town via bus and the views were pretty nice.
Staff was friendly and the pool was a welcome relief from the heat.
Was about 80 euros a night I think.
Sig,
You could also consider This Hotel. It's at the edge of town, but within easy walking distance. The Hotel is not luxurious, but very comfortable and the staff are fantastic!
It's right next door to another Hotel that has a restaurant with an incredible view over the bay.
Happy travels!
I would also recommend Mignon Meuble. Nice, decent sized and reasonably priced rooms with great location. Denny has already commented on many of its other good points, so I won't repeat them.
