Sorrento vs Ravello pro's and cons

Well almost done planning our three 3 week trip and I'm stuck on where is better to stay, Oct 29- Nov 2? I have rooms booked in Ravello at the Hotel Parsifal. After setting up my 8 hour tour of the Amalifi coast Stephanie from Sorrento `1st choice car service tells me that at this time they will be the end of the season and Ravello will be very quite and can be boring for 4 nights . If it rains there is really be nothing to do and very few shops and restaurants will be open this time of year . She suggested to stay in Sorrento instead. This would be home base for trip to Capri Amalfi coast drive etc,etc. We are paying 200 Eru's a night for 4 nights anyone have any suggestions on where to stay in Sorrento? or should i just stay put??

Thanks to everyone for all the great advise thus far!!!!

Best advice, go to the library and look at a guidebook for free. You are working with too little information.

Many posters here would kill to stay in Ravello in the summer. The real advantage of Sorrento isn't the resort city atmosphere (for example, virtually no beach) , but the superb transportation options for easy day trips. Ravello has exceptionally poor transportation options.

Check out Hotel Delfino outside of Sorrento. Beautiful location, but your are about a 20 minute drive from town.

As Tim said: Sorrento has better transport options around the region. Ravello is also inland so has no ferry (or train) service, and I'm not even sure that ferries around the Amalfi run much later than end of October. They DO run from Sorrento to Capri all year with the possible exception of the jetboats on days when seas may be too rough: that applies to regional ferry/jetboat service anywhere at any time of year.

You didn't mention Pompeii but Sorrento is the better choice if planning to do that one too: quick and easy by train. Train service is also a plus if it rains as you could hop it into Naples and do the archeological museum, churches, etc. Sorrento being a main tourist hub, I don't imagine very much at all will be closed in late fall.

Oh, we really enjoyed Hotel Antiche Mura in Sorrento: it's seeing a 9.4 score on booking.com, and showing $780 (total for 4 nights) for your dates.

I second the recommendation for Hotel Antiche Mura. I'll be staying there again in December.

Bookings were going fast on booking.com (only one left this morning) so I'd giddiyup if you want to snag that one through that site.

I'm a big Stephanie fan. We just did the same tour of Amalfi Coast last week and loved it. I chose to stay in Sorrento and it was easy and convenient to everything. We stayed at a lovely hotel (Ambasciatori) - very pricey but we wanted to splurge. If you have time try Ristorante Il Buco. We found it via RS guidebook and it was an amazing dinner!

I loved Ravello but unless my goal was to totally unplug, four days feels like too much

Have a great time. We are on day 12 of 16. Leaving Levanto (Cinque Terre) for Rome. Temps have dropped at least 15 degrees overnight.

The trip of a lifetime!

Just to mention? Sunrise will come late and sunset will come early at the time of the year that you're going. Unless you plan on hanging around the hotel a lot during the day, a balcony with a sea view may not be worth an extra price.

Good morning;

I would also recommend staying in Sorrento. It is a great location access to the entire Amalfi coast by bus, train, or car. You don't really need a car. Public transportation is good. Day trips are easily planned to Naples, Mt. Vesuvius, Pompeii, Capri (Blue Grotto) a must do! Ravello, even at the height of the summer tourist season is slow. You can go to the other towns such as Amalfi, Positano etc but they will also be quiet. If you want to just relax it guess it will be ok.

I stayed at the Hotel Del Corso in the town center. The location was Great! We were able to walk to everything. The rooms were good sized for Italy standards, really clean and the staff was very pleasant. They offer typical breakfast, cereal, rolls, fruit, cheese, hard cooked eggs, yogurt, coffee etc. I was worried about town noise even with our room having a small balcony which opened to the town street but when the doors were closed the room was quiet. The price was very reasonable. I think about $150.00 per night at the height of the season so it maybe a little less in October-November. I recommend restaurant DelFino by the water perfect in everyway and I hold a very high standard. Enjoy your trip.
