Sorrento vs Praiano as base for Amalfi Coast

I've searched but don't see any discussions on this topic.
We are traveling to Amalfi coast in October 2023 and are
deciding whether to make Sorrento or Praiano our base.

We will spend several days on Amalfi Coast and then several
days on Ischia, then taking ferry from Ischia to Naples to
meet up with a group going to Naples and Sicily. I'm
hoping the ferry still runs at that time to Ischia and then
from Ischia to Naples.

Which area should we use as base?
Thanks.

Sorrento is not ON the AC but makes a very good base.
Will you visit Pompeii or anywhere else while there? Easier from Sorrento.
Praiano does not have a ferry so your transportation options are limited.
We chose Amalfi as our AC base.

Hello :)

Out of your 2 choices I would choose Praiano for the Amalfi coast.
(Positano and Amalfi have ferry docks)

I also agree with the other poster about considering Amalfi as one of your bases.

We chose Castiglione (which is right below Ravello) for the Amalfi coast.
You can walk from the ferry.

Have you considered Positano?

Sorrento is great also. We chose that as one of our bases in 2019.

Happy searching! They are all beautiful. You can't go wrong.

Coming from Rome and taking the train to Sorrento? Does it go direct to Sorrento or do I have to go to Naples and then get to Sorrento?

Fast train Rome to Naples
Then local train to Sorrento ( or private driver or taxi to Naples port then ferry to Sorrento)

If you read thru some old threads all of this info is covered

Or consider a third option - Salerno. It is on the AC, and on the fast train line to the north, so you can get to Naples, Rome and onward easily and comfortably. Sorrento is convenient for the archeological ruins sites and the ferry to Capri. For the AC villages, Salerno is a better choice because most of the AC is between Salerno and Positano. There are 2 bus lines along the AC, one from Sorrento to Amalfi, the other from Amalfi to Salerno. So if you want to get anywhere beyond Amalfi, you have to change buses. I don't know how late in October the ferries operate.

Some of Salerno's assets: cheaper than Sorrento or almost anywhere else on the AC, lots of good restaurants, well-preserved historic center (worth a day's sightseeing), big (for the AC) sandy beach, lovely seaside promenade and walking distance from the train/bus station to the ferry pier or the historic center.
