Sorrento vs Marina Grande?

With so many hotels already booked for our dates (May 2008 for 3 nights).I have found Hotel Admiral in Marina Grande that gets great reviews. My husband is an avid fisherman & I thought he might like this small fishing village right below Sorrento. It also has a seafood rest., Emilia's which other travellers said to not miss. Will we regret not staying up the hill in Sorrento? We are looking for peace & quiet, relaxation & the scenery of the Amalfi Coast after 9 nights in Tuscany. We have never been to this area so I would like some advice for those of you that have. Thanks for any advice & suggestions.

You might want to check out this one. It is in Massa Lubrense which is the next village up the penninusla from Sorrento. It has a bus stop right in front and isn't an expensive taxi if you can't make the bus work. We had a car so did not use taxi or bus. The hotel is wonderful as is the restaurant!

Marina Grande is not crazy and noisey as the previous poster stated. I think they are thinking of Marina Piccolo - silly but the large marina where the ferries come and go is named Piccolo (small) and the small fishing village is Grande... go figure.

Dear Stephanie
We just returned from Sorrento this past Sat. Very beautiful!!. I think I would recommend up the hill . We stayed at La Tonarella and it was quite and serene. By the marina, there is alot of turists and commotion. By the way, the Emilia is decent, cash only, but I think Trattoria Azurra da Genarro ( 50 feet from Emilia) is better. They take credit cards and you can pick the fish you want. They are all on ice staring up at you...I'm jealous I wish I was there..Have fun!!

We went to Emilia and thought it was a good place - definitely not fancy. Our taxi driver said we had chosen the best restaurant of the ones at the Marina Grande. Be prepared - the fish came to our table cooked with heads and tails still intact.

As far as staying at the Marina Grande - I think there are many nicer places to stay.
