Sorrento versus Positano versus Capri

I will be in Sorrento for 2 days and 2 nights and I am wondering about going to another place for a day trip. Either Positano trails and beaches or Capri boating and trails as well. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Also wondering about how to reach Positano boat or bus or private transfer. Thank you in advance.

It is harder to get to Capri. Stick with Positano.

Either would make a good day trip. It’s a toss up, though I’d lean towards Capri. I recommend taking the ferry in any event, you can buy tickets on the spot.

Hmmm, I don't know about that? If going by ferry, it's pretty cut and dried, and there are FAR more of those going to Capri than to Positano. Current schedule, there are only two ferries from Sorrento to Positano per day, and the first doesn't leave until 10:30 AM. Coming back isn't much better: only three, and the last one leaves at 5:00 PM.

Ferries to Capri depart as early as 7:15 AM, and return as late as 6:45 PM.

There is always SITA bus to/from Positano, of course, but no way my stomach could have handled those so ferry it was! Those do run to/from that location for longer hours.

We enjoyed the hiking we did on Capri but we also stayed on the island so were able to experience lighter crowds in the town centers during evenings/early mornings. Still, you'll lose a big chunk of the mob - which will be thick in July in either Positano or Capri - if you hike instead of hang around piazzas. Didn't do any boating there so can't answer that question.

With just 2 nights, you'll more accurately only have 1.5 days to work with (guessing you're coming from Rome?) so not just oodles of time to kill.

I think either day trip is a great choice. Totally different experiences, both beautiful. The bus to Positano is hard on the stomach, as mentioned. I found Positano to be more down-to-earth while Capri felt like a taste of the rich and famous. Be sure to go to Anacapri, too, while there. The boat tour of Capri is fun, too. All of this, unfortunately, depends on good weather for a fun time. We had rain one of the times in Capri, not nearly so breath-taking. And both times for me were a long time ago - 2004 & 2009, so maybe things have changed.
