Sorrento travel in December

We plan to arrive at Rome on 12/14/13 and leave 12/30/2013. Base in Sorrento as Rick suggested in Italy 2013 tour book. Do we need to carry both winter and summer cloth? Rain coat too? Our luggage pack is heavy consider cloth, laptop, and camera... Does it difficult to drag the luggage onto the train? Or may be just rent a small car drive from Rome to Sorrento?

It is not usually summer clothes weather in Sorrento during December, in fact it can be quite chilly early morning and when the sun goes down. And expect some rainy and/or windy days. One of the times we visit Sorrento each year is late Oct/early Nov and I always pack autumn clothes that I can layer and include a pair of gloves and a scarf for the evenings. Having said that we are in Sorrento now and it has been a lot warmer than usual. No need for a jacket/coat during the day but the wind tonight turned cooler than of late. Weather in Italy has been very topsy turvy this year!

We just returned from Italy on Saturday, Nov. 2, and spent the first 6 nights in Sorrento and final 4 nights in Rome. In both locations, the weather was fabulous and unseasonably warm! No rain the entire time we were there. Just sun and blue skies. Lots of people sunbathing and swimming in Positano the Sat. we went there. We had packed so we could dress in layers but really only needed a light jacket sometimes in the evenings but then even barely. I wish I had packed a pair of sandels as lots of people wearing them. Never been in Dec. but I would not bother packing summer clothes and would definitely pack a waterproof raincoat and dress in layers.
