We (4 of us) will be traveling from Sorrento to Rome on a July Friday. Would like advice on the best and easiest way to do this. I have checked into a private car service but that is way too expensive for our budget, and I am not so keen on taking the train if it involves a lot of transfering from one to another. I have also checked into the Curreri bus, but it leaves at 6:30am which is way too early for us. Do I have any other easy, economical alternatives?
You have ruled out bus and private car hire, and you say you don't want to do the train if it involves "a lot of transferring" but it only requires one transfer, in Naples, so it's down to that or driving a rental car. I think you'll like the train better.
Thanks, Kent. I didn't mean to sound spoiled. It's just that the private car quote I received was for 600 euros, which would break my bank, and, taking a 6:30am bus would exasperate my two 17 year olds and probably result in too much crankiness! I was also under the impression that the train involved several transfers, not just one. Now that you have clarified that for me, I will look into the train timetable and chose a mid-afternoon one.
You didn't sound spoiled, I wouldn't do the car hire or crack of dawn bus either. Take the Circumvesuviana commuter train to Naples, they run about every 30 minutes. Then transfer to the express train to Rome, about 2/hour. Rick describes the details in his book.
Vicki, I'd be curious as to how you are getting there in the first place? You face the same questions from Rome to Sorrento. One alternative is that you can take ferry from Sorrento to Naples (maybe even a jet boat) but you then have to transition to the Naples train station (just over a mile away) for a non-stop train to Rome.
You've already explored the bus option. The Marozzi bus line is similar. Leaves at 6:00am for the Tiburtina train station in Rome.
Kent is correct about one train change in Naples. Take the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Naples. Go upstairs and take the Trenitalia train to Rome. About 40 trains a day and almost all with no train change.
Larry, We are getting to Sorrento by way of Naples. Am planning on taking the Curreri bus from the Naples airport for about 7 Euros pp. (That's a much more affordable price from my perspective!) Does this sound like a feasible and advisable plan?
Airport bus from Naples airport to Sorrento for 7Euro P/P. Excellente.
