Sorrento to Rome airport hotel?

Will leave Sorrento, the end of September, to a hotel somewhere near the Rome airport. Spend the night and catch an early flight to the US. Can we travel by train or bus from Sorrento to a hotel then get to the airport next morning? Big hotel at the airport seems pricey. Should we go to Naples, leave our luggage at the train station, spend the day and then on to our hotel near the airport? Or save Naples for a day trip from Sorrento? Need a hotel suggestion, that we can get to the airport, which is in a cute small town as it will be our last day in Italy!!#!&?!

Carolyn, It would help to have some idea how early your flight leaves? Whether to stay in Rome or closer to the airport will depend on the time. Yes, you can travel by train or Bus from Sorrento to Rome. Train is the easiest method. Take the Circumvesuviana from Sorrento to Naples, walk upstairs and transfer to one of the Freccia fast trains for the trip to Roma Termini. Happy travels!

Our is flight from Rome to the US at 8:00am. Have been to Rome before. Thought it would be less of a hassle to get a hotel somewhere near the airport. Would need one with a shuttle the next AM or taxi to airport. Do we have to take the train from Sorrento, change trains in Naples, change trains in Rome and then to the airport? That doesn't sound like a good last day in Italy!

Your last day is going to be as you described - - no way around it. We recently stayed at Hotel Al Porticciolo in Fiumicino, the town where the airport is located. It's fairly new and modern, very clean, and a nice breakfast is included in the price. I think we paid 90 euros. No shuttle, but when we checked in, we told them we needed a taxi in the morning. They called right then, and the taxi appeared at the time ordered. The taxis charge 15 - 18 euros, I guess at the whim of the driver. BTW, you do realize, don't you, that some people advise that you be at the airport 3 hours before departure? That seems excessive to me; but when it comes to making an int'l flight, better safe . . .

Get to the airport 3 hrs before your flight even with carry on luggage?? What do you do for 3 hrs?! Would Fiumicino be a good choice for a hotel the night before the flight? Is there much we could see without a car? Can you fly from Sorrento to Rome? If so, would that be a better choice than the train? Does the train go through nice scenery past Naples?

There can be hours long check in lines as well as security lines. You'll need to be there 3 hours early to be sure to have enough time to get through all of these. If not, you may miss your flight. Better to have time to sit at the gate than no time and miss your flight. Donna

If your flight is nonstop from Rome back to the US, and is not going through another European airport first, please heed Donna's advice, and get to the airport 3 hours early. If you really don't want to do that, at least allow 2 and a half hours. Here's some of the ways you'll be spending time: 1. Finding where you check in. It's not always obvious or easy to find.
2. Waiting in line to check in. Since they have to inspect passports, even those not checking luggage have to wait in line. And even if you have no check-in luggage, everyone else will, so the line takes time. 3. Being questioned by security personnel. The last few times I left both Rome and Milan, the flights to the US left from the same area as the flights to Israel, and had similar security. I and all the other passengers were questioned individually. Where did I stay? Was I sure that I stayed in hotels and not with friends? Could I show a hotel receipt to prove this? Etc, etc. If, on the other hand, your flight is first to another European country, you can probably get there about 2 hours before your flight. However, as always, look at your airline's website for their recommended check in allowances, and for their policies regarding latest possible check in. Lest you think I'm exaggerating, I just found this post by Ron in Rome. Remember, he lived there and is familiar with the airport, and he still describes a nasty scene: http://www.roninrome.com/transportation/another-chaotic-morning-at-fiumicinos-leonardo-da-vinci-airport-fco

I'm pretty sure that if you want to fly, it has to be from Naples. The advantage is that it's a little simpler. You can get the Curreri bus from Sorrento (same place as the Cirumvesuviana train) straight to the Naples airport. Then you'd land at FCO and can get a taxi to your hotel. Note that if you choose this option, you should ask where to get the Fiumicino taxis. You don't want the City of Rome taxis. If you take the train, you start with the Circumvesuviana, change at Napoli Centrale, then change again at Rome Termini to the Leonardo Express, still needing a taxi to your hotel. Check the Tripadvisor forums for some ideas about how to spend your time in Fiumicino.
The idea of spending your last day in Naples and getting in late to Fiumicino is, superficially, a decent alternative. However, IMO the only thing of interest in Naples is the Archaeological Museum. Naples is the only city in Europe that I have truly hated and couldn't wait to leave.

Thanks for the great posts! Guess I'll reconsider getting to the airport 3hrs early - 5am. :( Was hoping I didn't need to go through Rome to get to FCO but looks like I do. Will research some more and consider relaxing in Fuimicino after the long train ride. Any suggestions for hotels or B&B in Fuimicino?
