We'll be there in September. I've been told that the best course of travel is to ferry from Ravello to Amalfi and then a short bus ride to Ravello.
Can anyone confirm this is the best way to go?
Grazie!
Either bus or ferry from Sorrento through Positano to Amalfi, then 30 minute bus ride up to Ravello. Same thing to return. However, September is a very busy season and you may find long lines for buses, and if the one you are waiting for gets filled, you may have to wait for the next one, or even the one after that.

That company has partnered with Rick Steves. We have booked the Amalfi Coast Tour for October. 50Euros per person, in a small AC van (6-8 people) - with 3 different stops. It's a 9hr tour out of Sorrento. It's also recommended in the newest RS Italy book
We stayed in Sorrento in September of 2013. Of the three days that we were there, the ferries did not run on two of them due to rough seas. (The weather was beautiful though.) We took the bus to Amalfi and while not horrible, it was certainly not a pleasant experience; we picked up lots of people in Positano who could not take the ferry to Amalfi because it was not running. As I recall, we had to wait a while for the bus to Ravello as well as for the return, and then we had quite a long wait for the bus from Amalfi back to Sorrento.
Having said all this, if I had known of this 9 hour tour mentioned above, I would have done it despite the expense. Sound like a much more pleasant experience.
di_wright, "best" is a trick word on travel newsboards. Does it mean "cheapest", "most scenic", "fastest", "least annoying", "comfortable", or what?
Most people want to see more than one town on the Amalfi Coast when they stay in Sorrento, which is not on the Amalfi Coast. We hired a car and driver for 8 hours, which was around 250 Euros. We walked around three towns and stopped in two more. Your hotel will have an affiliated car service, or you can use a company in Rick's book.
