Sorrento to Positano Tips, suggestions, or recommendations?

So my wife and I spending 3 days in Sorrento before heading up to Rome. Arriving Wednesday afternoon to check-in/dinner basically, then Thursday/Friday in Sorrento before heading to Rome on a Saturday. Still planning but thinking the plan might be Thursday in Capri and Friday in Sorrento...or vice versa. Any round trip suggestions on how to get from Sorrento to Capri and Sorrento to Positano. Don't have any idea what to do once we get there but we like beaches, shopping, scenic views and food of course. Any tips on places to visit and methods of transportation to take is greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Assuming this is summertime since you mentioned beaches??

Sorrento can be used as a day trip base. It is a safe ( compared to Naples) place for tourists to see the area. So if waiting on line for ferries and spending 6 hours or so in a town then doing the same thing on the way back...plus ferry travel time..that will be fine...

I personally don't find Sorrento charming..but if day trips are what you want it makes sense.

I have been to this area 10 times in the last 13 years so I know it well.
I would recommend staying where you want to SEE and BE! Like Capri...stay on your first night...it is a 1 hour ferry ride from Naples...very magical once the day trippers leave and the night rolls in!

Same goes for Positano...like it, stay there a night or two then head back to Naples/Rome.

I took this path many times in off season, so no ferry from Positano I had to take bus train combo to Naples

...there will be ferries between Positano and Naples in summertime..

Naples ferry port to Capri stay 1 night depart in late afternoon for Positano by ferry about 45 minutes I think
Stay in Positano 2 nights see Amalfi etc
Take ferry from Positano to Naples and then bus or taxi is cheap to Naples Central Station for 1.5 hr train ride to Rome..make sure you get the FAST train not the 3 hour regional milk run!

If swimming you will need to bring water shoes....I take cheapo flat kind just to scramble over the rocky bottom and I leave them behind at the end of my trip! They can serve as slippers along the trip too.

You are going to have a great time! Pack light secure all valuables under clothing and you will have peace of mind!
Just keep an eye on luggage on trains and ferries too, outside zippers should be secured as theives will open them on ferries too..i have had this happen, but I only keep a rain poncho and umbrella in there...they were.hoping for a camera or ipad! Luggage is stored in one or two main areas on the ferry...so maybe keep electronics with you in smaller bag.

Enjoy!

Any round trip suggestions on how to get from Sorrento to Capri and
Sorrento to Positano.

OK, transport:

Obviously, you must take a ferry from Sorrento to Capri and back. Here are the current schedules:

http://www.capri.com/en/ferry-schedule?from=sorrento&to=capri
http://www.capri.com/en/ferry-schedule?from=capri&to=sorrento

Just buy your tickets at the Marina Piccolo in Sorrento.

For ferries from Sorrento to Positano and back, here are the current schedules:
http://www.capri.com/en/ferry-schedule?from=sorrento&to=positano
http://www.capri.com/en/ferry-schedule?from=positano&to=sorrento

If the seas are too rough for the ferries to dock in Positano, you'll need to take a SITA bus:

What to do? Reference the tourism websites for each location as everyone's must-dos are up to personal preference:

We didn't do the beach in Positano (Sorrento really doesn't have any) but we stayed in Capri for 2 nights, did some hiking and some general exploring of the island from both the town of Capri and Anacapri. We skipped the Blue Grotto as, IMHO, if anything is a potential tourist trap there, it's that one (did a lot of reading beforehand).

Positano was a day trip and we just did lunch, drinks and some walking around. Some RS posters love that one but we were lukewarm on it. Like Capri -some day-trippers didn't care for it - it may have been different had we spent a couple of nights there when a lot of the day-tourists leave.

We had 3 nights/2.5 days in Sorrento and it was a perfect transport base for what we wanted to do (Pompeii, Positano and Sorrento itself).

I also recom taking the bus one way and the ferry the opposite. Gorgeous views, a wow moment for sure.

Also, how are you getting TO Sorrento? If flying into Naples, the Currieri bus direct from Naples Airport is a winner (€10, air conditioned) Circumvesuviana train is an experience(!)

Well, you don't have much time. So, go to Capri, stay if you want as mentioned, that is best.

Hire a car and driver from Sorrento. Go to Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. Spectacular sites and sights. Travel along the coast is difficult at best and public transport can get overwhelmed. As mentioned above, travel by sea if you can at least once. It is a pretty nice view from the Med. You can ferry to/from Positano to Naples as well.
