Newbie here. I am visiting Italy in mid-October this year, and I want to travel from Sorrento to Positano, by ferry, as I get very car sick and have read that travel via shuttle or taxi on those curvy, narrow roads can be a bit much on the stomach of those prone to car sickness. I was looking at the ferry schedule, and and see I can leave at 9:00 from Sorrento and then, because I don't want to take the chance on something happening with the last ferry, take the next to the last ferry at 3:00 back to Sorrento. I just want to walk around Positano and take in the sights, grab a bite to eat and enjoy the scenery. Has anyone done this before? Any tips? How accurate are the ferry schedules? I've always traveled with a tour group and this will be my first trip without one! Thank you.
Welcome to the forum!
The ferries stop running sometime in October and the Positano dock is small and mostly affected by sea conditions and weather so there is no way to predict if ferry will run or dock on your day
Just be flexible
Sea sickness might also be an issue for you
You really don’t need more than a few hours for Positano
Consider visiting Amalfi and/or Ravello on same say
ETA
Schedule indicates ferry will run thru Oct 31…but as always depends on sea conditions, not just weather
Contact Elizabeth at Blue Star Positano to discuss options
Respectfully, Blue Star is a private boat-tour company and while very good, they're also expensive. Go with the public ferries to/from Positano unless you have a generous budget.
Some years ago we have did what you're planning on doing and didn't have any problems. It is wise to plan to take the next-to-last boat back to Sorrento, though. If you have a touchy stomach (I do), you might want to take a preventative dose of your tried-and-true anti nausea medication in case the sea is a bit rough the day of your adventure.
