Sorrento to Positano?

We expect to arrive by train into Sorrento. Does anyone know the average cost of a taxi or limo to Positano? And would that be adviable over renting a car?

you can take a bus easily and cheaply. they are frequent and clean , used by most tourists. having a rental car would be unnecessary and a burden imo. parking would be close to impossible in
Positano unless you are staying at a 5 star hotel.hopefully you can walk downhill & steep to your destination in
Positano.
i would ck on your address location ahead.

The SITA buses between Sorrento and Positano run no less than hourly throughout the day and well into the evening hours.

You can use the same ticket for the Circumvesuviana rail between Naples and Sorrento to connect to the SITA bus to Positano. This is the UNICO CAMPANIA Fascia U3 ticket. On one-way trip costs 3.30 Euros. However, if you break the trip in Sorrento, you need to purchase a separate bus ticket for 3 Euros, called the UNICO COSTIERA, valid for 90 minutes, or 6 Euros for 24 hours.

The SITA bus departs from directly outside the Sorrento Circumvesuviana station.

Once you arrive in Positano, you may need to ask your hotel to pick you up (depending on the hotel's location).

Here are the schedules:

Jan - Everyone is right - The Sita bus which goes from Sorrento's main square to Positano is the way to go. Inexpensive BUT also a very exciting bus ride of 30 minutes. You will love it!!
Don't pass up the oldtown section of Sorrento with all it's wonderful shops and cafes - It's right off the main square.

Ciao, Greg

As GAC said, it leaves from the train station. Be sure to sit on the right side of the bus for the best views.

CORRECTION to my previous posting:

The correct ticket to buy to travel between Naples and Sorrento OR Naples and Positano is the UNICO CAMPANIA Fascia 5 U5 ticket (not the U3), which costs 3.30 Euros one-way and is valid for 180 continuous minutes of travel on any combination of rail and bus.

Between Naples and Positano, you would take the Circumvesuviana rail to Sorrento, then transfer to the SITA bus outside the Sorrento station. The Circumvesuviana train takes 65 minutes to Sorrento. The connecting bus to Positano takes 45-60 minutes.

You must "punch" the ticket before boarding the Circumvesuviana train, then again when you board the onward bus.

NOTE that the Circumvesuviana rail does NOT accept Trenitalia tickets. It is an entirely separate and independent carrier from Trenitalia. The Circumvesuviana does accept the UNICO CAMPANIA tickets (as does the SITA bus).

BEWARE: If you are travelling STRICTLY WITHIN the geographical limits of the Amalfi Coast (Sorrento to Salerno including Ravello), you must purchase the UNICO COSTIERA tickets to travel on the SITA bus. The UNICO CAMPANIA tickets are not valid if your origination and destination falls strictly within this geographic area. The UNICO COSTIERA offers four types of tickets: 2 Euros for 45 mins.; 3 Euros for 90 mins.; 6 Euros for 24-hrs.; 15 Euros for 3 days.
You may never board a bus with an expired ticket, but are allowed to complete your trip if the ticket expires while on the bus. For example, if you have a 90-min. ticket and are travelling between Sorrento and Amalfi (100 mins. ride), you are OK even if the ticket expires 10 minutes before arrival in Amalfi.

There are also a handful of hydrofoils between Sorrento and Positano, but these run only during the summer, are subject to cancellation due to bad weather, and are much more expensive than the handy SITA bus.

In some cases, you may need your Positano hotel to come pick you up at the bus stop.

Jan as other posters stated it is very easy to take the SITA bus from Sorrento to Positano. When we arrived in Positano we had a rental car and just parked it at our hotel and took the train to Pompeii, hydrofoil to Capri and bus to Positano. We took a boat back to Sorrento from Positano and it was beautiful. What month are you going? We were there in July 2006 when Italy won the World Cup. Very exciting!!

To all those who recommended the SITA bus along the Amalfi Coast - thank you !!! and you were totally correct. Driving is a nightmare and terribly exhausting for the driver. The buses are great, except for the several times yhat they were so full between Positano and Amlafi that they did not even stop in Praiano which meant those of us in Praiano had to wait 45 minutes in the hot sun (in late September) for the next bus and ride absolutely smashed with others standing up on the way to Amalfi. But the countryside is so lovely, it was worth it.

Just arrived home from Sorrento yesterday. I would not rent a car to POsitano, impossible to park and driving is a nightmare. The buses are the best way to go, if you want to pamper yourself I would guess a taxi ride would be appx 65. euro one way. Used Moretti taxi for a tour of the Amalfi Coast, it was our one luxury and worth it.
