Sorrento to Paestum rent a car?

We will be staying in Sorrento for 4 days in Dec. Looked at going to Paestum by train, looks long & complicated. Would it be wiser to just rent a car and drive there, and if so, could we do it in one day & return to Sorrento or plan to stay overnight in Paestum?

If you can stay overnight, I recommend it. The varying types of light on the temples is beautiful. I don't know if the temples are lighted at night during the winter, but in summer it's a superb sight.
