Using Sorrento as a home base and need to know what is the best way to visit Paestum? Is there a tour from Sorrento that I could take?
It's difficult. We gave up on it with five nights in Sorrento. Theoretically, you could devote an entire long day to the excursion independently. But one issue is crowding and lack of space on the last bus and ferries of the day. Do you know there is a three-day Pompeii ticket that includes 4 other sites?
Would love to know more about the three day ticket including Pompeii please.

I once visited Paestum from Sorrento on my own, and it was a full day commitment. I took the bus to Amalfi, stopping in Positano, and visited those towns in the morning. I then took another bus to Salerno and yet another bus to Paestum. After visiting the temples and museum in the afternoon, I took a train to Pompei (the new town station), walked across town to the Circumvesuviana station and took that train back to Sorrento, arriving back just in time for dinner. That might not be "best," but it is a way to combine Amalfi Coast and Paestum into one long day trip, keeping in mind that Paestum really isn't very close to Sorrento even though it may look close on a map.
A possibly less time-consuming and more straightforward alternative is to take the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Torre Annunziata, where you pick up the regular Trenitalia service to Salerno to change for a train stopping in Paestum.
Tim, I would appreciate any information you could give me on the pass you mentioned.
I assume Tim was referring to this:

What you want is of the Campania Artecards. There are different variations of the card so you should choose the one that best fits what you want to see and do. I visited sights from Naples to Paestum and in between. Saved some money and time.
Taking the time to visit the ruins and museum in Paestum is well worth the effort.
If you are making use of buses and ferries on your other days, then I would consider splurging for a driver to Paestum so you can also do a bufala mozzarella farm tour. That extra bit just makes it feel worth the expense to me.
Karen, will you be spending any time in Naples? I easily visited both Salerno and Paestum by train in one day, and returned to Naples in time for dinner. The ruins and museum at Paestum are wonderful, especially in the light of late afternoon.
We hired Monetti Taxi. They picked us up at hotel in Sorrento, drove the almalfi coast and stopped in Amalfi and Positano, then Paestum. Well worth the splurge! Was like having a private your guide for the day.
This tour leaves from Sorrento. It includes the Buffalo farm.

Sorry not to reply sooner. I just wanted to give you an alternative in case you also have to give up on Paestum! At the Pompeii or Herculaneum ticket office, simply ask for and pay extra for the three consecutive day ticket. We only had time for Oplontis but there are two more besides that. They are smaller but also art-historically important. I am not saying they replace Paestum, of course.
Note that none of those five sites allow same day re-entry. And only Pompeii has food inside.
Edit: There are some other important attractions to consider, including historic Naples, just as easy by Circumvesuviana train. Also the Palace of Caserta. I did not see The Cave of the Cumaean Sibyll, but I’m interested because of paintings like Lady Hamilton [look her up] As The Cumaean Sibyll. Note that besides Pompeii relics, the Archaeological Museum in Naples has the Farnese Marbles.
