We will be in Sorrento for 5 days in September and are wondering if there is an easy way to do a day visit to Paestum. We will not have a car so will need to use public transportation. Is there a train that goes between Sorrento and Paestum? Is it a worthwhile trip?

Hi Barb, My husband and I recently were in Sorrento and drove to Paestum, it is definitely worth the visit! Before we decided to rent a car for our trip, we looked through the Italian rail system's website and found that we would have to take a train to Pompeii and from there to Paestum. If you go to the rail system's site, it will give you an idea of how to get there and the approximate time it will take. I think you can also take a bus to Salerno and then the train to Paestum. Either way, its very simple to get to the temples.

The circumvesuviana goes from Sorrento to Pompeii Scavi. The FS (trenitalia) train goes from the city of Pompeii to Paestum. You will have to walk or cab across town to get from the circumvesuviana to the nation train system. But this is faster than a bus to Salerno.

Henry is correct. There is some distance between the Circumvesuviana Pompeii stop and the Treneitalia Pompeii stop. One alternative is to spend the extra 20 minutes or so getting to Naples and then take the Trenitalia train to Paestum.

Thanks all, that is very helpful! Think maybe the train to Naples and then to Paestum might work the best for us if the Circumvesuviana and the Treneitalia are at the same station. Less hassle is worth 20 minutes more on the train. Does anyone know about how long it takes to get from Naples to Paestum? I'm thinking this will take an entire day to get there, spend some time and get back to Sorrento, does that sound right?

We will be in Sorrento in July. Our hotel website lists a number of tours that are available to be booked through them. We plan to go to Paestum and will book through the hotel once we get there and decide on a day to make the trip. Try your hotel as a tour option.

Naples to Paestum takes 1.5 hours, but it's only 1.0 hour from Pompei. It will take you about 3 hours each way from Sorrento to Paestum via Naples and it takes a couple of hours to tour the site, so you'll probably want to set aside the day.
