Sorrento to Naples airport early morning

This topic has been discussed a bit in a previous thread I started but I have a more specific question.

If we had a 9:30 am flight out of Naples, would we stand any chance of getting to the airport from Sorrento early that morning? I don't really want to move to lodging near the airport but also don't want to miss our flight. I can save almost $300 by taking the 9:30 vs a noon flight (I realize we will still have to leave very early for the noon flight). I'm just curious if hiring a shuttle to take us from our hotel to the airport might be manageable early, early in the morning.

Sure it's possible but it probably comes down to how risk averse you are. Sure, you can hire a private driver...which will eat up a big chunk of that $300. Explore cost on MyDayTrip? That service has been recommended by others on RS forum. Picking a random date for June 29 for 6:00 AM, it's showing me nearly $190 for 4 adults.

Oh, and get an estimate from TopExcursion too? That's another recommended company, and may cost less.

There are shared shuttles too, and they're going cheaper but the amount of stops along the way may mean getting up even earlier than currently planned, and there's a bit of a risk there too of those pick-ups taking longer than anticipated. That said, maybe someone here has a recommendation for one they've used.

Hello whitneychaoscoordinator,

How much earlier before the flight do you have to arrive? A minimum of one hour but usually they recommend two which puts you into the airport at 7:30. The drive from Sorrento is at best an hour, but if I was driving you to the airport I would allow more.
So you're leaving 6:00 (at the latest) which means you're up at 5:30 (at the latest) and paying someone probably most of your saved $300 dollars to drive you there.

Personally this doesn't sound like the end of a vacation I'd relish.

For a 9:30 flight I'd say you need to be stay in Naples the night before. Honestly, even noon sounds a little early to be schlepping from Sorrento but if you're on the 8:14 circumvensia you will in Naples Centrale by 9:30 and then a taxi to the airport is close so you could easily be there by 10:00 but that's as late as I would push it. Barring strikes or serious mechanical issues this seems pretty straightforward. I've planned and executed crazier sounding plans and been fine but there's always a chance - especially in Italy.

Have a good trip whatever you choose,

Had the same situation a few years ago and found the Stelle Hotel the Businest just a few steps from the Naples train station… not a real great neighborhood but a safe, clean Hotel with restaurant and very reasonable… they’ll call you a cab in the morning and in less than 15 minutes you are at the airport and no stress or big costs.

I don't like having to check another thread, but I see that this trip begins in late June. That means your return to Naples might be in the peak month of July. We slept five nights in Sorrento, leaving the first week of June. We were not flying home, so it's not a parallel situation. But we used a car service to take us to the Naples rail station for our (non-changeable, non-refundable) Frecciarossa train to Rome. We were plenty early, but there was a backup for a tunnel on the route.

We were happy to pay (ten years ago) 100 Euros for the car, because the Circumvesuviana TO Sorrento had been so hot and jammed, elbow to elbow. And we were (IMHO) overcharged 15 Euros for a very short cab ride in Sorrento, to the Ambasciatori Hotel. So the car service seemed like a bargain. BTW, we saw some fierce auto traffic from the Circumvesuviana.

If you read this board a lot (I see these are your first posts here) you will find that people frequently plan for Sorrento (or even Positano, much more remote) without thinking realistically about their departure day. Like Clint Eastwood, you have to ask yourself, "Do I feel lucky?"

Our trip from Naples train station to Sorrento hotel took two hours in late afternoon, with a private car service, about 200 euros. It was evening and it was raining the entire time, this past May.
Good luck!

Where does that flight go?

Depending on the destination ( e.g. UK) you would need to go through passport control as you would be leaving the Schengen zone. If, on the other hand it goes to AMS, FRA, CDG, it is a 'local' flight and passport processing is not done.

Your destination dictates whether 90-120 minutes ahead of flight time is sufficient, or closer to 180 minutes the better plan.

I will end by quoting Tim " Like Clint Eastwood, you have to ask yourself, "Do I feel lucky?"

We were in Sorrento in April, took the shuttle bus to Naples airport. Should have taken a bit more than an hour - it took 3. Road construction and traffic on the only narrow winding road out of Sorrento was unexpected. Luckily, our flight was at 3 pm, so we still arrived in plenty of time...to find out the flight was cancelled. We were just going to Rome to fly home the next morning, so we did eventually get there via a 2.5 hour bus ride provided by ITA.

We thought a shuttle to Naples and then fly to FCO - instead of taking 3 trains - would be the better option. Ha.

I offer this as a really good reason to go to Naples the night before.

It's not worth the risk. We hired a private driver in October and because of traffic, it took us almost 3 times longer than it should have - our driver said traffic is always crazy. We missed our train from Naples to Florence. You would probably have better luck taking the train from Sorrento to Naples over a driver as the train should be on time. That said, I'd get to Naples the night before.

When we were in Sorrento this past May, 2023, the Circumvesuivius train was not running on time. There are a lot of single track tunnels, and once the schedules back up, trains have to wait their turns to get through the tunnels. Hopefully we have convinced the OP that the transportation infrastructure in this part of Italy is not dependable.
Get to the airport the night before.
Good luck!
