Sorrento to Monterosso

We are leaving Sorrento on Sept. 14 th and traveling to Monterossa. Is our best option a train? I know it's a long trip.

The local train from Sorrento to Napoli Centrale takes 1 hour and 15.

Once in Naples you have 3 options:

  • The fastest route from Naples to Monterosso: 5 hours and 20 minutes, with two train transfers. The Walk-up fare is 96 Euro per person. Of course you can save a lot getting discounted tickets in advance on trenitalia.com, but note that the cheaper tickets come with restrictions.
  • The only direct train from Naples to Monterosso is the daily Intercity #522; no changes, but that train takes 6 hours and 50 minutes. Since it departs from Naples at 17:31, you'd be in Monterosso 22 minutes past midnight. The Walk-up fare is 42 Euro pp
  • Last, You could take the 7:30 AM Intercity train from Naples to La Spezia and then the 2:15 PM Regionale to Monterosso. Only one change, but this route takes 7 hours and 5 minutes. Without mentioning the need to be in Naples at 7:30 AM.

Look up the timetables after June 12, when Trenitalia will have uploaded the full summer schedules. They could add another direct Intercity to Genoa and make it call at Monterosso.

By car it's 9 hours, plus stops. It's a 430 miles trip. Expect to pay 35 € for tolls and 70 € for gas. Multiplied by two since for the driver this would be a return journey. I'd be surprised if you paid less than 400 Euro.

No idea about long distance buses, but you must be really fond of overcrowded tiny villages on clifftops to visit both the Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast on the same journey.
