Sorrento to Montepulciano - best mode of transportation

Would love any input on how best to get from Sorrento to Montepulciano. We will be renting a car while in Tuscany. Should we take a train into Naples - Rome -Chuisi? Are the train stations close together for connections? Or should we just drive from Sorrento and maybe stop somewhere along the way? Is it really a 5 hr drive? Will encounter toll roads so how many euros will we need on hand for that?
Afterwards I will be heading out from Tuscany to Cinque Terre so if you can also let me know where I should drop off the car. Thinking most likely be in Florence but heard there are issues w/no drive zones or are there rentals on the outside of the city where we can avoid that? Or should we consider Pisa instead? Is it easier driving around there? A little further away but is it worth the extra drive? If you can let me know what my options are I would greatly appreciate input. Grazie!

Quickest, train to Naples, high speed train to Rome, then train to Orvieto, rent the car and head to Montepulciano, rent in Rome. You could drive from Sorrento, it is 235 miles roughly. I have driven from Rome to Positano and it is about 4 hours. If you want a nice town to stop at on the way try Tivoli. Nice place and lots of villas to see, like Hadrian's Villa.

Yes, the main autostrada is a toll road but it is fast. Pay cash, or credit card. Check this site https://www.tolltickets.com/country/italy/telepass.aspx?lang=en-GB

IF you are visiting Pisa drop the car there, or La Spezia, then grab a train in to 5 Terre. If you are visiting Florence that might be an option but it is a bit of a train ride to 5 Terre. Lucca is another good option, for staying, training, or dumping the car.

Where to after 5 Terre? Consider that in your planing as well.

We did this trip last October. Drove from Sorrento to Orvieto. Took us 4 1/2 hrs, we stopped at an Autogrill for lunch. We also stayed in Tuscany for 5 nights.

Our fuel was around €40 and tolls were €26. For us, not having to change modes of transportation, and leaving when we wanted to was great.

If you're headed to the CT, the best place to drop the car is La Spezia. Rental agency's are toward the port
Then taxi to the train station.
Are you visiting Pisa? Parking is available very close to the Duomo.

If you decide to take the train, there is a direct train, a bit slower by 15-20 from Napoli Centrale to Orvieto with no change in Rome.
It leaves around 10:30.

Thanks for the toll road link and info. That is helpful. We weren't planning on spending any time in Pisa or Florence. We've been to Florence already. Just looking to get to 5 Terre. Looks like Pisa car rentals are within walking distance to the train station per google map. Is that true? If so, might be easiest. Lucca is definitely an option to consider too though. LaSpezia adds to the drive time so don't want that. Thanks
