My plan was to catch the train from Sorrento to Ercolano Scavi. Then walk to Herculaneum and back to train station , then use Vesuvius Express bus to visit Vesuvius. It seems they have updated the train schedule and there are very few stops at Ercolano Scavi. Looking for suggestions or options. .

That's weird, I wonder when/why that happened? We stayed in Sorrento in April and Ercolano was a regular stop. There is also shuttle service to Vesuvius from Pompeii. Have you checked if you could visit Herculaneum during the time when the train runs, take the bus to Vesuvius and return via Pompeii?
Ok I think I have sorted it out. Circumvesuviana to Torre Annunziata. Transfer to the regional train to Ercolano Scavi. Visit Herculaneum and Mt Vesuvius. If we are back to Ercolano Scavi before 541pm catch Campaigna express back to Sorrento. If not regional back to Torre Annunziata and transfer to circumvesuviana to Sorrento.
The plan is get in Herculaneum around 830-900am then catch the Vesuvius Express bus at 2pm. Returns back to Ercolano at 5pm.
Should work.
