Sorrento to Capri

I will be staying in Sorrento with 1 family member in mid September and am planning a day in Capri. Is it recommended to book a Ferry ahead of time or can I get one on the day of our excursion? Thanks so much.

How many days will you be in Sorrento before you take the trip to Capri? If you'll have a day or two, I'd ask the staff at your hotel for recommendations. They may even book the tickets for you.

When you arrive at Marina Grande, you can take the Funicular up to the town - https://www.sorrentoreview.com/capri-funicular-railway-times-and-prices.html .

When you're getting ready to head back to the dock for the trip back to Sorrento, be sure to leave lots of time. I've found that the Funicular gets very crowded at that time of the afternoon. I didn't want to take a chance on missing the last Ferry, so I took one of the open top taxis. It was a beautiful and relaxing drive back to the dock.

Thank you for your answer.
We will be arriving in Sorrento the day before. Would it be enough time to book for the next day? We really wouldn't want to miss Capri.

We stayed in Sorrento for 11 days in April and booked a couple of days in advance. We did see people buying tickets the day-of but I don't know what kind of crowds the region will have in September. The Alilauro ferry is quite large and holds plenty of people. https://www.alilaurogruson.com/

We have stayed in Sorrento several times in July, Sept & Oct., most recently last Oct., and have never purchased hydrofoil tkts to Capri or Amalfi town in advance. When you return to Sorrento, you can either walk back up, take a bus or what we find the easiest is take the elevator up to the communal park. Charge was 1 Euro or 1.25 Euro.
