My wife and I are driving the coast in a few days (august 30) leaving Sorrento early morning and staying the night in Agropoli before heading to San Rufo a small farming town where my grandfather was born. I was needing suggestions on what towns should we stop in and look around?

You could stop in some of the Amalfi Coast towns in the morning (I like Praiano and Minori). Paestum is very close to Agropoli, if you want to spend some afternoon time there (archeological zone, museum, beach).
It's not on your itinerary, per se, but the whole coast south of Agropoli is beautiful and is part of the National Cilento Park - so San Marco di Castellabate, Pisciotta, Marina di Camerota... they're all wonderful towns.
