We are going to be in Sorrento in March and I contacted Monetti Taxi by email (as recommended in the Rick Steves guidebook) on December 3 and December 5 but have yet to get a response from them. Does anyone know if they changed their email address or if they are generally slow responding? Also, are there any other suggestions if we want to hire a private taxi to tour the Amalfi Coast? Thanks!
At 3:47am I received a reply and reservation confirmation from the Monetti family. I will still welcome any tips/suggestions for our upcoming stay in Sorrento. Thanks!
Where are you coming from (and going to), Jack? Naples?
So it's only 2 nights in Sorrento? We spent 5 nights there this last March. Came via private transport from Naples Centrale train station, then used Curreri Viaggi bus from Sorrento station to Naples Capodichino airport. No problem either way, although the private transport was 95 Euro and Curreri was 20 E--that's how the timing worked out for us, so in my mind I averaged the cost.
Sorrento is great for shopping, eating, lodging, and great as a base to other A.C. points, but in and of itself there's not a ton of history unless you look for it. And in your limited time there, you're best off staying near the train/bus station and daytripping to Positano, Capri, Naples, Pompei, Ercolano, any number of places, most all of them less than an hour away. Leave mid-morning, come back late afternoon, nap, then have a great dinner in Sorrento--as I said, food is wonderful and reasonably-priced.
One more thing--in March, weather is unpredictable. We had to cancel a cooking class at a farm at the tip of the peninsula overlooking Capri because of storms the night before that had knocked the power out at the farm. No problem. Instead we took the Circumvesuviana train to the Archeological Museum in Naples instead. Figure temps 40's to 60's, not bad actually.
Enjoy your planning!
I would return to Sorrento just to eat at Ristorante Bagni Delfino. You sit by the water with the fishing
boats below. The seafood is incredible.
We used Amalfi Coast Destination for our day trip. Very professional company. The driver picked us up (In a suit) at our hotel in Sorrento and drove us in an air conditioned Mercedes Van, so we were high up enough to see the cost. They have different routes they can take you or you can make up your own. Our driver was really pleasant, recommended a restaurant for lunch and made reservations for us and really knew how to drive that area. It was not cheap and we paid cash at the end of the day, but we were two couples sharing the car so it was more affordable. I chose a driver due to hearing Rick Steves Podcast on the Amalfi coast and the recommendation not to Skimp if your just doing a day trip and to hire a private driver. There is also mondo tours, I think it is called, which gives you the same experience for much cheaper. We met some travelers at the hotel we stayed at that had done this tour and loved it.

Absolutely right! The ambiance alone would bring me back. Fresh seafood while you watch the fishermen mucking about in their boats.
This past March, we used Sorrento Silver Star for transfer from Naples Airport to our Sorrento hotel, and from our Sorrento hotel to Napoli Centrale (main train station), with a stop in Pompeii and Herculaneum on the way. They responded quickly to my initial email inquiry and were prompt in picking us up. They were competitively priced based on other estimates received. The drivers were very friendly, courteous, and helpful. My experience with Monetti was the same as the OP (they took several days to respond; by then I had booked our private taxis with Sorrento Star). As for the Amalfi coast, I highly recommend taking the Rick Steves shared tour with Mondo Shared Tours. For only 50 euros per person, they provide a nice Mercedes van with English speaking driver, and stop at Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. The drill is they drop you off in each town, and then set a meeting time to return to the van. There was plenty of time to explore, and we grabbed a sit down lunch in Amalfi. It was a great day and a fantastic value (private drivers for 10 hours would cost much more). Mondo requires a minimum of 6 to be signed up for a given day; on the day we went, there were only 5. So, I asked if the 5 of us pay 60 euros each, would they do it (since total was 300 euros). Everyone agreed and off we went. Mondo also does a shared trip to Capri, but we went on our own via the hydrofoil and explored on our own. Weather-wise, it was also perfect - sunny and warm - during the days we were in Sorrento (23-27 March 2017). Lastly, for a GREAT seafood dinner, I highly recommend Taverna Azzurra on Via Marina Grande. Their crab ravioli was amazing!
Thank you all for the comments and suggestions. We will be in Sorrento 4 nights and in Rome 4 nights. We are flying into Rome and we have a private transfer to Termini Station. We have round trip tickets between Naples and Rome on Italo. We have secured Monetti Taxi for our private taxi around the Amalfi Coast. One day in Sorrento we are planning to go into Naples. We havent been there since 2014 and we are looking forward to it. I am equally excited about Rome. It is our 4th trip to the Eternal City since 2010 and this time we have tickets to the necropolis of St Peter's. We have always wanted to go but our youngest child was under 15 so she wasn't allowed (until now). We are contemplating a day trip to Venice. We have been there 3 times (the last time was March 2016 for a week) and we fall deeper in love with it each time. Please keep the suggestions coming. I love the ideas and insight!
