Sorrento stay over New Years

Hello,

We will have 3 full days in Sorrento in the last week of December (30th, Sat/31st, Sun/1st, Mon.)

We are hoping to make a trip to Capri and hop along the Amalfi coast in that time.

Would love some feedback on a possible itinerary for our Sorrento stay:

  1. SITA buses, it appears, maintain the usual winter schedule on the 31st, so probably a good idea to use that day for a trip to Positano and Amalfi? An option might be to bus to Amalfi, spend some time there, then bus to Bomerano, do some part of The Path of the Gods trail, bus to Positano, then return to Sorrento. Of course, that would depend a lot on the weather, I imagine. Even so, seems like a hectic day, correct? Is it a better idea to just plan on spending some time in Amalfi and Positano on the day trip?

  2. 30th, weather permitting, might be the best day to visit Capri. Probably best to plan on spending the 1st in Sorrento since a lot of things including buses are shut down or have a very limited schedule on that day.

Any corrections/commentary regarding all this would be highly appreciated. I hope I have interpreted the SITA and ferry schedules correctly.

Thanks!!

The thing is, there isn’t much to do on the AC in the winter. Yes, the buses run and will be a beautiful ride along the coast, and hiking could be great - depending on weather. If it isn’t raining, you could plan on doing the whole Path of the Gods and that would take most of a day if you started in Bomerano. I would try to hike one day, and spend another day riding the bus with stops along the way - Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Vietri Sul Mare, and wherever else looks appealing to you. There won’t be much to do in Capri either. I would devote a day to Naples if you haven’t already done so. Also Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Day 1. I would suggest visiting the town of Amalfi and then hopping another bus to Ravello for the best Amalfi Coast experience. I don’t know if I’d try the Path of the Gods in late December. To me Positano is great to look at from afar - either the roads on the edge of town or from the sea. It is extremely hilly and loaded with high-end shops.

A shorter outing is walking back to Sorrento from St Agata Sui Dui Golfi. (Short bus ride up hill from Sorrento rail station.)

Please, Please, come back here and give us a first-hand report on Sorrento and the adjacent AC in winter! Thank you.

Thanks much for all your feedback.

@rachele
We really want to do Path of the Gods, hopefully the weather will comply. While researching this trail I encountered some commentary suggesting the path can be narrow and vertiginous in places. Although, alternatively, clips on YouTube have little kids darting about the trail. Would you have any insight on that? We have been to Naples and Pompeii on an earlier trip so hoping to cover some other areas this time around.

@Philip
Yes, at that time of the year, weather/temperature will have to be conducive for Path of the Gods to be viable.
I have heard elsewhere too that Ravello is very beautiful/charming. Will add it to our itinerary.

@Tim
The walk from St Agata Sui Dui Golfi to Sorrento sounds perfect for the day we are staying put there! And I will most certainly remember to provide a trip report on AC in winter.

Thanks!!

Vishal, I wish I could give you the coordinates of the entrance to this 99% paved, all downhill walk. (Don't wear flip-flops, it's just too steep for comfort. But you don't need hiking shoes, just sneakers or closed-toe shoes.) In case you can't get info at a TI office, here is a GUESS, from my Google Maps study: https://maps.app.goo.gl/gjMGtryhUpu875AT7

As this little line suggests, there is one road to cross, but the walk is 98% car-free. Many views, and a few orange trees, along the way.

Rerferring to the map again, we had a wonderful informal seated lunch at Da Mimi, with families out for First Communion or similar little girl white-dress occasions, very "Rick Steves Moment." I forget the day of the week, but it was pretty full, of locals. Also a bathroom stop just before beginning the 1- 1.5 hour walk.
