I have 6 and a 1/2 days in Sorrento in August. I want to visit Pompeii, Mt Vesuvius, Herculanuem, Capri, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello if possible. As I am travelling by myself I am wondering if I should look at group guided tours or just go by myself. I want to get the best out of my 6 days but I also want some time just to wander and see the area. Any suggestions on an itinerary.

I used the train to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum. Very easy. At Herculaneum I rented the audio guide. In Pompeii I just used Rick Steves audio guide (very good - and free). I went on successive days. Herculaneum doesn't really need more than 1/2 day, but I was there in winter when days were quite short and it was raining too. Pompeii is the better part of a whole day, if you want to take it all in. Do walk out to the Villa dei Misteri. On the other hand, I'm told the amphitheatre is not very impressive, so I skipped it. You could probably combine a visit to the archaeology museum in Naples with your time in Herculaneum. It's another wow.
