Sorrento or Venice?

Hello! My husband and I are leaving on Monday for a six-week trip in Europe. In Italy, we are spending 4 nights in Florence, 2 in Venice, and 5 in Rome. We are regretting not seeing southern Italy at all, and are considering going to Sorrento instead of Venice, and stopping by Naples or Pompeii on the way back up to Rome. We are not relaxing much on this trip and thought that it would be nice to see some beautiful scenery and rest between Florence and Rome.

Would it be crazy to skip Venice and see Sorrento instead? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Sorrento is my favorite place in all of Italy, followed closely by Venice. You can't do both, so I would stick with your original plan and go to Venice. On your next trip you can plan to visit Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.

I agree...as much as I LOVE Sorrento, you CANNOT miss Venice. Naples is nothing special at all and Pompeii is not that terrific either. The Amalfi Coast, Capri, Sorrento are magnificent but you MUST see Venice.

Pompeii was the most amazing place I have ever been to, anywhere. Venice is unique for sure. Hard call but no losers.

I would stick with your original Florence-Venice-Rome itinerary, but would cut Rome back to 3 nights, and spend 2 nights in Sorrento. It sounds like that's your last stop in Italy, and you couldn't do it in a more beautiful place than Sorrento. We found four days in Rome to be more than enough.

We have seen them both, both are great, Pompei can wait, Venice is sinking! Go to Venice now before it is too late! Seriously, Venice was for us, the most romantic place in the world. Enjoy! Jeff

Thank you so much for all of the advice! I'm thinking it would be best to stick with the original plan, and save up more money for a trip to Sorrento another time!

whichever city you choose you will not be disappointed. they both are are on my favorite list but for diff reasons. Realize lodging in Venice will always be alot more than Sorrento unless you are staying at hostels or sim. Maybe that is the decision point. enjoy

Venice. I love Sorrento - but nothing compares to Venice.

Yes ... Venice is Venice. If you plan to spend only 2 nights in either Venice or Sorrento, I'd say go to Venice. Cos when you're in Sorrento, you'll want time to tour the Amalfi Coast or go to Pompeii. Not much time for relaxing if you only have 2 days there.

The food in Sorrento is much better. But Venice is Venice. See it before it's underwater.
