We have three days to spend in Italy. Which is a better venue. Venice for three days or Sorrento with a day trip to Capris?
Depends what time of year and where you are coming from/going to
Venice and Sorrento are very very different
“Three days” would require 4 nights
Whoa, your question is way too broad to answer.
Where are you coming from, and where are you going next? What time of year?
We would be staying there from May 2, 2026 to May 5, 2026 having just arrived from Florence where we will have just spend three days.
And...after those three days in either Venice or Sorrento we would be travelling to Catania, Sicily to spend three days in Toirano, Sicily.
How would you be traveling- train, car, plane?
Sorrento is a pain and time consuming to get to/ from
It’s a bit late to be booking accommodations especially in Sorrento
Its very late to find accommodations for May in Sorrento, or anywhere on the AC, but logistically it makes more sense than Venice if your next stop is Sicily. Unless, of course, you would fly to Sicily from Venice. Sorrento and the AC are a royal PITA to get around in, especially on a short stay where you will day trip every day. And will take longer to get to on your travel day, likely eating half a day before you are settled into your hotel.
Due to transportation challenges getting to Sorrento my pick would be Venice. Is it 3 full days or does the first day include travel? 3 nights is only 2 full days which isn't ideal for either, but you'll get more siteseeing time by picking Venice.
If you do choose Sorrento, my personal opinion (likely in the minority) would be to skip Capri. We found it very overrated and incredibly expensive. Sorrento works for many other side trips (Pompeii, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello) - but I agree that Venice sounds like it might work better for you in this instance.
Thank you all SO much for your prompt and insightful responses. We've decided...Venice it is, Ciao !!!
Toirano is up by Genoa, not on Sicily. Do you possibly mean Taormina?
But honestly I think your best bet would be to pick a destination that connects Florence with that place Taormina(??). That probably just means an airport but there is a train/ferry combo if you're so inclined.
From your dates you're only gonna be there 3 nights. That means 2 long travel days with 2 full fun days sandwiched between.
Both are great, but Venice wins big time.
