We are considering spending a week near the Amalfi coast the end of October and are wondering where it is best to stay. We will have two children with us (ages 4 and 6-second trip to Italy GREAT travelers) and two other couples. How bad is the traffic that time of year?
I think that's an easy call. Sorrento is much more family friendly and is better positioned as a central hub. Positano, while beautiful, is extremely steeply pitched (and steeply priced) and not an easy home base for visiting the many surrounding sites.
agree with Michael. Sorrento is easier to reach, is a better hub for going to Pompeii or Capri, and is easier to walk around since it is flat. Every evening (at least in the summer) they block of some of the downtown streets for the passeggiata - a time to stroll around, enjoy a gelato, etc.
Thanks for the quick replies! I think we are going to take both of your advice and stay in Sorrento. Any suggestions on the best area? We will be looking for an apartment, hopefully within walking distance to most everything.

We were there last Tuesday. Both were very crowded. I agree with Michael Sorrento is a lot less expensive and the train can get you to Pompeii and Naples in case you want a brief break from the coast scene.
