We are heading to Italy at the beginning of March with our 2 teenage boys. I am debating on whether or not to add extra time to Rome or Sorrento. We plan on doing Pompeii, Naples, and the Amalfi Coast during our 3 days in Sorrento, but I am concerned about the weather and things being closed with it being the off season. I have one day available to add to either Rome or Sorrento. Which should I do? Any advice is appreciated!
How many nights do you already have in Rome?
How long are you going to be in Rome? Sorrento is nice just to take it easy and to use a base to see Pompeii. There is so much to see and do in Rome that I am headed back for a second time. I have no plans to return to Sorrento.
If you have an extra day, spend it in Rome. Or better yet out touring the suburbs of Rome. We stayed down at Zagarolo (OliveTreeHill.com) and it was very interesting. The industry there was making Roman soldiers' helmets. And the gymnasium for training gladiators was there. Ivano drove us to the top of a 1,500' mountain town, and we walked down 2,500 year old paths to Palestrina--a Pagan Temple. There's as much to see outside Rome as there is inside Rome.
If you like the outdoors and being in relaxing setting, I recommend a day trip to Capri instead of Naples.
Where does your flight home originate?
Are you planning to do Rome first or last?
We are flying in and out of Rome. Currently, we have 3 days in Rome. I'm considering adding a day there.
