Going to be in Rome in July for 5 nights - is it feasible to go to either Sorrento or Capri as a day trip? Is it even worth considering that?

No. Too far. You would have hardly any time at all once you got there. Plus you'd be exhausted from the traveling. Now, if you can swing an overnight stay, that's different.

Capri would be out of the question. Too much travel and ferry time would give you so little time to see the island.
