Sorrento or Capri

Hi, am taking the Southern Italy tour in October. We have a free day in Sorrento and I was wondering if I should stay in town and enjoy Sorrento or take the boat ride to Capri. Is Capri worth it or too touristy?

Are you staying in Sorrento? If you are I would definitely go to Capri for the day. They are both touristy but Capri is special and Sorrento is a fun place to be in the evening.

I went to Capri for a day in October a few years ago, and really enjoyed it. It won't be as crowded (or hot) as in the summer months. Still plenty of tourists, but you can get away from them by, for instance, walking to the Villa Jovis (the emperor Tiberius's villa- highly recommended).

You can also take the bus to Anacapri and take the chair lift to Mount Solaro. Beautiful views over Capri. I agree that Sorrento is fun at night.

I would go to Capri which is a nice boat ride and the island is really hilly with great views from multiple sites. The main city is touristy however you can take walks and enjoy the views of which some are spectacular. The tour I went on spent 2 nights in Capri at a 5 star hotel.

I'll be the opposing opinion... I love Sorrento and don't like Capri at all. Have been to Sorrento 3x for a week each time and have gone to Capri each visit - to rent a small, private boat which is fun. I find Capri to be way too touristy and... boring. Not to mention expensive and time consuming to get there. I love spending the day in Sorrento leisurely walking and exploring. In fact, Sorrento is my favorite place in Italy.

Capri is nice as is the coast around Sorrento. I don't think you'll go wrong spending the day in Capri or taking the bus to a couple of the towns (e.g. Positano) along the coast. Have fun.
