Sorrento or Capri?

I will be in Sorrento for about a day and a half. My train arrives to Naples at 2:05. From there, I plan on going to Pompeii, on the way to my hotel in Sorrento. The next day I have a full day in Sorrento. The following day, my train departs Naples at 11:54. What is there to do in Sorrento? Will I stay busy for a full day? The tour books don't seem to have much written about Sorrento. Or, should I spend the full day going to Capri? Any advice about anything with this trip would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If I had one full day in Sorrento, and it's a choice between between Sorrento or Capri, I'd choose Capri. Just try to make use of your arrival evening in Sorrento, stroll the town, find a nice resturant, etc... Another option instead of Capri is to vist the Amalfi coast via the Sita bus. The bus can take you to Positanto, Amalfi & Ravello, all a very nice day trip from Sorrento. Bus tickets are 6 euros for 24 hours. Be warned, you will probably spend a lot more money visiting Capri for the day, versus visiting the Amalfi coast towns.

Hi Rebecca, I stayed in Sorrento for 2 or 3 nights. It's pretty with one major street which you can walk in one morning, with restaurants, shops and bars lining up the street. I went to Capri on a very hot day and didn't see alot of people because the locals sleep all day the shops don't open til about 4 p.m. It's gorgous and you must take the sky ride up which is breathtaking. It's just better to go a bit later in the day so you'll see more action. If you can do both, that would be great. Also, a lot of people (including myself) will take a drive to Positano which is beautiful. Have fun.

Well, if you're interested in the Blue Grotto and in the chairlift to the top of Monte Solaro on Capri...then I'd definitely do Capri. If you intend to walk, sit in a square and soak up life, read, dine, or just sit by the water (plus shop, I suppose!) then I'd stay put in Sorrento.

Thanks for the info. If I were to to go to Capri, I doubt I would do the Blue Grotto on this trip. That will be next time :)!

We got an early start to Capri from Sorrento and did the Blue Grotto tour right off the bat. Afterwards we walked around and there were just a bunch of shops and crowds/tourists which didn't appeal to us too much.

I definitely suggest doing to Blue Grotto this trip if you can.

We loved the Blue Grotto too....caught the early boat from Sorrento to Capri and did a two hour boat tour around the island of Capri for about 14E each. The tour included a stop at the Grotto (but the 10E charge to get in the Grotto is on top of that) and some amazing views of the Faragloni Rocks. We were done with the boat tour/Grotto and back to the main harbor in Capri by noon, so if you followed that plan, you'd still have plenty of time to spend the rest of the day in Capri and Anacapri doing the chairlift. You could catch a later ferry back to Sorrento and spend your evening browsing the main street and having dinner.

If going to Capri, set aside time for the Blue Grotto. Don't pass it up and save it for next time, especially if the weather and conditions will allow a visit. When we were there this past April, we met some folks who were so excited to finally get into the Blue Grotto. As this was their 3rd attempt into the Grotto. Twice, condtions did not allow them to enter. So if the conditions are right, go for it. You can head right to the Blue Grotto after getting off the ferry, but rather than take the boat back to Marina Grande (where you started) ask your rowboater to row you over to the stairs to the right of the Grotto. Follow the stairs up to where the local bus goes back to Anacapri. From Anacapri you can take the stairs for an easy but steep walk down to Marina Grande. The walk takes less than an hour, depends on how many pictures you take, but the views are 2nd to none! By far one of the highlights of our Capri visit.
