My husband and I are contemplating a trip to the Amalfi Coast from November 5-10, staying in Sorrento and visiting Naples, Pompeii and the coastline. Does anyone know the following: weather at that time? how many restaurants, sites, etc will be closed? have you been during this time and what's the overall atomsphere?
Have been in Sorrento at that time. Over the years that we have been visiting Sorrento the season seems to get longer and longer. You will find enough restaurants open for your visit. A few hotels will be shutting down for the winter but, again, there should be more than enough choice for you
to find somewhere you will like. If you look at the hotels on Tripadvisor you will be able to see which ones have reviews from people staying in November.
There will be other visitors there but not the scrum that you get in high summer and so the town feels more laid back. Plus of course the 16,000 plus inhabitants going about their daily business.
The major sites will be open, albeit with earlier closing times. The ferries to Naples and Capri, weather permitting, run all year round. If you want to visit the Amalfi Coast towns and villages the local bus service, although on its winter timetable, should be more than adequate.
As to the weather, who knows! We usually visit May and mid to late October and before last October would have said the weather although coolish at night is very pleasant during the days, but not beachwear weather. Some rain and the occasional spectacular thunderstorm but usually short lived and no real obstacle to getting out and about. However, last October we had the heating on in the apartment and I had to buy a scarf and gloves (very nice they are too!). More rain than we were used to as well. We just ploughed on regardless and enjoyed our holiday in one of our favourite places. It shows that nothing is a given weatherwise but you may strike it lucky.
Edit - meant to say that days will be shorter ie sunset on November 1 is 5pm so that could have a bearing on on your daytrip plans.
Yep, we're making Sorrento our home base and just doing day trip to the other sites...
Sorrento is a great place to stay. You can catch the train or boat to Naples, Positano, Amalfi etc. You will not regret your choice. Enjoy.
Check the ferry schedules - I think they run less often by November.
I'd love to experience Positano in the winter!
We didn't go to Sorrento nor the Amalfi Coast, but stayed in Naples and visited Pompeii in early November. The weather was near ideal. Warm afternoons, turning pretty brisk after sunset. It made our cheap hotels (with no air conditioning) much more pleasant.
Everything we wanted to see in Naples / Pompeii was still on full schedules.
