We'll be ending our two week trip to Italy in mid-May with four days in the Sorrento and Amalfi Coast areas. I'm torn between booking a hotel (or AirBnB apartment) in Sorrento - or Massa Lubrense, which is quieter and slightly less expensive. Would the latter make it difficult to get to places such as Pompei, Capri, Positano, et al? Should we 'home base' in Sorrento? We aren't planning to drive, as we've heard it's kind of treacherous in that area (although we'll have a car in Tuscany) and will be traveling from Florence to Naples by train. Any suggestions?
There is local bus SITA service to/from Massa Lubrense but no other forum of transport aside from taxis. With your itinerary, Sorrento would be my choice as you'd want to go there to catch a ferry to/from Capri and a train to/from Pompeii. The same would be true if you want to use the ferries versus buses to get around the Amalfi Coast. I haven't explored bus to Pompeii from M.L. but I'm guessing the train - which we've taken - is the simplest, most direct option.
You can get to Positano via SITA bus as well but it look like it involves a change. The summer schedule isn't up yet but this will give you a rough idea:
It's not as if Sorrento is all that far away so taking the bus to-and-fro might be fine but they do have a tendency to fill up sometimes. With luggage, you might want to grab a cab in Sorrento to get to your hotel and then back to Sorrento catch a train out. Where are you flying home from?
