Sorrento / Marina Grande

Thinking about staying in Marina Grande in Sorrento. Can anyone tell me how far of a walk it is to Corso Italia where they close the streets at night? Is it uphill? How late do the buses run and any idea of the cost? Is it a pretty safe walk late at night?

Thank you.

Sorrento is a pretty small place. you can walk across the main part of town in a fairly short time. You'll be safe. Just take the usual precautions you would anywhere else and enjoy. There's the buses for the other towns along the coast but can't remember city buses. Sure someone else will know for sure.

It's not far. I would say less than half mile. It's slightly uphill. It's very safe. A lot of people walking late at night. Views from Marina Grande are spectacular. You can see Naples and Vesuvius across the bay. You won't need bus from Marina Grande. The buses start down at the harbor and go to Piazza Tasso which is right in the center of Sorrento. I think they continue to bus station which is next to train station.

We have stayed at Marina Grande a number of times. You have two choices for the walk to the town centre. Either the road (via del Mare) which takes you to the end of Corso Italia. Or the steps then road (via Marina Grande) up at the right hand end of the Marina when facing the sea. We prefer the latter, especially at night because you walk past a walled garden and the smell of honeysuckle/jasmine is wonderful.

Here is a map of Sorrento showing the various locations.

PS - meant to add timetable for local bus(EAV) services , the service for Marina Grande is on the second page. Check again when you are there because timetables do change.

My family and I stayed at the Ulisse Deluxe overlooking the marina. The walk to the main downtown area is perhaps a 10-15 minute walk and not uphill. However, if you're staying down next to the water it is a steep uphill walk that will take you twice as long. If you're staying at or by the Ulisse Deluxe pay attention to the road signs for your turn....it's a bit tricky to get to it and if you go too far on this one way street you have to go back track and get on the one way road again...which is time consuming. You won't need a bus if you're able to walk. It was very safe to walk around at any hour. We used Sorrento as the base to visit Pompeii by train. It was very easy to do.....much easier than by car. Quick and inexpensive. There's a stop right at the entrance.

Look at Google Maps and you'll get a clearer picture of the walk and distance on that site.

Love sorrento! Have been several times. Check out Delfinos in marina grande. My husband and I had a wonderful meal here on our last visit this past Oct.

Is a nice little village and beach, maybe 7-8 minutes from Corso Italia. We had a great time there with a lunch stop at "Il Delfino" Restaurant!!
