Sorrento lodging: Casa Astrita or La Tonnarella?

I am going to spend 6 nights in Sorrento with my 27 y.o. daughter. There is availability at both of these places. La Tonnarella looks great, and it boasts of a beautiful private beach, but it costs nearly double (165 euro compared to 95 Euro)compared to Casa Astrita. Has anyone stayed at either of these places, that could help me with this decision? Is La Tonnarella really worth the extra cost?

Casa Astrarita looks wonderful, and it has terrific reviews on Tripadvisor. (As does La Tonnarella.) As for whether La Tonnarella is worth the extra cost, I guess it depends on what's important to you. I can tell you why we selected La Tonnarella (for an upcoming trip, so I haven't stayed there yet):

  • private beach: we figured, given the heat (late June/early July), it would be great to be able to use the sea that we'll be seeing so much of! And, they serve lunch at the beach.

  • free on-site parking, since we'll have a car

  • on-site restaurant (for dinners): after a long day of sightseeing, sometimes, it's nice to be able to eat a great meal at your hotel

  • on the outskirts of Sorrento: given the summer crowds, we figured being off the beaten path a little bit would be nice

I hope that that helps.

We stayed at Casa Astarita last May and had a nice time. Small, but very friendly place, perfectly located on the main street in Sorrento. It might seem noisy, but they close the street to traffic at 19:00 or 19:30 each night and not open again until morning. We had a balcony overlooking the street and a very big room (for Italy). The breakfast was nice and there was a computer to use in the lobby. It is easy walking distance from the train station and to the docks to take a ferry maybe to Capri. Enjoy!

You're welcome, Cyndie. So, did you make a decision? And, if so, what did you base it upon? (Could be useful to others in a similar situation ...)

We've stayed at La Tonnarella twice and are returning this July. We love this hotel. Casa Astrita does get good reviews too, and while we didn't stay there we passed it many times when in town. The first difference is CA is in town with no sea view. LaT is on the edge of the cliffs with a stunning, mind blowing view of the Bay of Naples, Mt. Vesuvius, Capri and Naples. For us, if we're going all the way from San Francisco to Sorrento we want to be able to see the view from our room/hotel. LaT has lots of terraces, flowers everywhere, Exceptionally good food, dinner on the terrace w/the view, a nice beach with lounge chairs & umbrella's (it was a thrill for us to swim in the Mediterranean). It's a very easy 8 min walk to/from town, or very easy to get the bus. The staff is very nice. Beds were very comfortable. Very good buffet breakfast included. Free internet in the lobby. Hope this helps you decide what is best for you :)

This is the description of the suite that we reserved for our family of 5: Suite composed by: 1 bedroom with a queen bed, 1 bedroom with 2 twin beds, 1 bedroom with 1 twin bed, 2 bathrooms, 2 balconies. Rooms are connected and separated with doors and small corridors, bedrooms all on the same level. Big bathroom with hydromagge on another level downstairs. Balconies furnished with a table and 2 chairs. Air conditioning and private beach access.

Their regular rooms are listed as doubles, but they list prices for 3rd and 4th person, so it sounds like they have at least some rooms that can be used as a quad/family room.
