Sorrento - La Tonnarella or Anthiche Mura Hotels ?

We are staying in Sorrento for 5 nights in May of this year. We have been looking at these two hotels. Mura has close to 10 rating from people but has no sea views. Tonnarella has decent reviews but has great sea views. Also walk back from Piazza Tasso seems like a 30 minute walk and some climb (400 feet ?) whereas Mura is very close. Hard to decide on the trade-offs. Any advice ?

Thanks for your reply Kathy. Sorry to hear you had bronchitis in beautiful Sorrento. We had a similar experience last year in Paris and the Select Hotel staff were fantastic. We are tilting towards Antiche Mura for the same reasons you mention as also the great reviews. Cheers !

We stayed at Antiche Mura in October and loved it. I ended up quite sick with bronchitis and the staff was amazing trying to help in any way they could to make me feel better. The breakfast was fantastic. The Antiche Mura is so close to everything so after a long day of sight seeing, it was nice to just walk out of the hotel and head to a variety of choice of restaurants close by and after dinner I was always so tired, I was grateful the hotel was close by. We also could go up to one of the hotels on the cliffs for a dinner and sea view and every day sightseeing I saw magnificent views so I didn't feel we lost anything staying in town.

Another vote for the Antiche Mura, where we stayed in April 2010 and hope to return next year. Centrally located, wonderful breakfast, huge and lovely bed and bath (we were in the garden wing area), helpful staff. Easy to get to from both bus and train. We walked down by the sea and it was lovely, but all in all for the price (much less than the hotels with views) the AM was fantastic. Plus they have their own lemon grove adjacent to the pool! The air in Sorrento is heavenly.

We stayed at Hotel Antiche Mura and loved it. Have not stayed at La Tonnarella, so cannot compare but having seen the hotels clinging to the hills south of town, I can attest it is a bit of a long walk (or you need a bus or cab) to the center of town where you will find most restaurants and the train station. From Antiche Mura you can pop out anytime to shop, drink, eat, etc. (Or pop back into the hotel to rest, freshen up, etc.) Not so from the hillside places. Although they do have fabulous views.... I woudl also reinforce what others have said about the staff. Absolutely fabulous!

Hi Elizabeth and Laurel,
Thanks very much for the votes. Looks like AM is a real win. We will pick that hotel.

Just an added thought:
I have not been to Sorrento yet, but we plan to stay at Hotel Il Nido Sorrento (not Il Nido Amalfi). From what I saw on Trip Advisor and other sites, it has an excellent rating by customers. It has scenic views of Mt. Vesuvius from the Bay of Naples and Sorrento. The hotel is located on a hill about a ten minute drive from the city of Sorrento. The hotel operates a shuttle bus that runs regularly (except during the Italian nap time from 11:30 to 3:30pm). I am not sure, but I think it runs fairly late. I read that the restaurant is excellent and reasonably priced. It used to be recommended in Rick Steves' 2007 book. However, if you choose A. M., I feel confident that it will be very nice! Happy travels! Ruth
