Sorrento itinerary help

I am trying to plan the best way to see pompeii, Naples, Sorrento and Capri, without backtracking. So my question is, when i am leaving rome, could i see naples and pompeii, and make my way to sorrento for the night and capri the next day? im just wondering since im not exactly sure how the buses work going that way, and where we can store our bags. Naples isnt a huge must do, if thats too much in one day.

What in Naples do you want to see? From Rome you would take the train to Naples and then to go to Pompeii you go downstairs in the train station and take the Circumvesuviana train to the Pompeii Scavi stop. You would then continue on that train to Sorrento when you are ready to leave Pompeii. If you were on an early enough train to Naples you would have time to do one two things maybe in Naples, but it could make for a long day. If you are spending a couple of nights in Sorrento, you could take the train or ferry back to Naples and go look at a few things as well. Where do you go after Sorrento? You can check bags at the train station in Naples if you decide to stop there for a little while before going to Pompeii and then there is a place to store bags at Pompeii too.

Great! thats what i needed to know, if we could do it without going all the way to sorrento with our bags and then coming back.. we are coming from rome i think, unless do you think it would be easier to go from florence to sorrento, before heading to rome since we are flying out of there? for example, instead of going florence-rome-sorrento-fly out of rome? anyways, there isnt too much in Naples that i have planned, just remember going there when i was in high school on a bus tour and we had the most amazing pizza! and also i believe there is the archeological museum there too? is that difficult to get there from the train station?

From Florence to Naples on the fastest and most expensive train it will take 3 hours, so if you took the first train at 7am, you would be in Naples at 10am. You can store your luggage at the Naples station, they don't have lockers but a baggage deposit place. It is around 15 minutes by metro to the Archaeological museum. Then it will take 22-35 minute train on the Circumvesuviana train (depending which one you get on) to Pompei scavi. So it is doable but it will be a long day. My advice for Capri is only go if the weather is nice, it was pouring rain for us and we did not enjoy ourselves...we will have to go back, Sorrento is beautiful, try to save time to see it! Have a good trip!

As the other posters have said, it is definitely doable to see Naples and Pompei on your way to Sorrento. To get the most out of your sightseeing, I would recommend taking the first Eurostar out of Rome. We took an early Eurostar out of Rome and arrived in Naples around 9 am. Checked our bags at the Naples train station. Had time to do a self guided walking tour around Naples and have pizza for lunch. Hopped on the Circumvesuviana to Pompei. There is a free baggage check at the Pompei site. We had several hours to tour Pompei. Hopped on the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and were in Sorrento for dinner. It is a full day but lots of fun. One recommendation is to be sure to pack light. The Circumvesuviana can be very crowded. In fact we ended up holding our bags on our laps. If it turns out that your planned day to Capri ends up being stormy, there is plenty to do in Sorrento. In fact, I think the ferry to Capri shuts down when it is real stormy. But if it is a clear day, Capri is worth a day trip.

Natalie, your idea to go directly from Florence to Naples is a good plan, given the locations you want to see and the fact that your return flight is from Rome. The plan presented by Martine seems to cover all the bases. It would help if you could provide some further information though. For example, what time frame are you considering for that portion of your trip? What time of year will you be travelling there? Which locations are MOST important on your list of places to see? IMO, it would be a really good idea to visit the Archeological Museum before you visit Pompeii, as a lot of the artifacts from that site are now located there. Cheers!

hi there, thank you all for you information so far, it is really helping me plan our trip. I am planning this trip pretty far in advance, since we will be going June 2011, but i have been waiting 7 years, since this will be my graduation gift from university. we are planning around 3 days down there including pompei, naples, sorrento and capri, with our base being in sorrento. Really only pompei is the biggest sight wed like to see, but i really want to stay in Sorrento. I think anything from there is fair game. I want to have planned itineraries for us to do, to pick and choose, depending on what we are feeling that day. Any more advice is much appreciated! thanks :)

It will be shame that you miss Paestum. Ancient Greece without going to Greece.

Yes, i know.. i keep thinking i have an itinerary set and then i read something else that makes me want to visit somewhere else! This will be my second time in Italy, but the first time was when i was in high school and on a bus with 50 kids. So i dont remember much, and did not have as much appreciation for most things i saw, so this time my mom and I (her first time ever abroad) are doing it on our own, so we are going to redo all the main cities, plus the addition of Venice.

I would just like to make a suggestion. When in Sorrento try and have lunch or dinner at L'Antica Restaurant. It is absolutely one of the most beautiful restaurants that we had lunch at.
