Sorrento Itinerary

I need some advice on a itinerary. I am going to be traveling from Rome, and am staying in Sorrento vs. Naples. I want to know the best way to use my time:
Day 1: I was thinking, Capri
Day 2: Pompeii, Herculaneum
Day 3: Mt Vesuvious, Naples Museum

Should I stay the night in Naples or go back to Sorrento, if I were departing the next morning? Can I condense this schedule more? I really want to make the most of time. Thanks!

I have read all the discussions, thanks. I was just looking for a little advice as to if that is to much to do in one day, or to little? or if there was a better way to organize it.

Thanks anyways...

Hi Audrey,

Depends on your preference. Personally if I had a free day in Sorrento I would take a tour of the Amalfi coast. The Amalfi coast is some of the most beautiful scenery in Italy, not to mention the memorable towns as you head south. Your hotel can recommend a private driver for this type of excursion. I have been to all the places you mention many times, but the Amalfi coast tour gets my vote.

Thanks Kent for your constructive criticism....I am sure it will help. It seems to me, you are pretty found of the search box since, that is all you seem to tell anyone. It might be better for you not to respond to people if you don't have anything constructive to say. I thought this was a message board where people could ask questions, and get some useful information.

Greg- Thanks for the tip. I am just trying to fit the most in, and am not really sure if I am giving myself enough time on each day to see those attractions.

Audrey...I thought it appeared from Kent's second response that he DID try to answer one of your questions...about staying the night in Naples? Unfortunately, neither Kent nor anyone else on this board can read your mind, so he had no way of knowing whether you had used the search box to discuss numerous tips that have been given re: Naples...not everyone is as thorough as you. And if you want to make a search, you'll find Kent suggests a lot more than using the search box. People who ask questions are completely free to ignore any answers that they wish on this board. Perhaps you might want to consider that before posting furher rude responses to people trying to help.

Thanks Norm!

You missed the response from Kent, that he deleted, before his other response....Saying why would I sleep in Naples if I had a room in Sorrento? Which is what I was replying to.

But, I guess I will stick with the book, and try to get some answers that way.

That was my first post, and not my 1375'th post like Kent's, I was just looking for some useful advice if I was allowing enough time to do each of those activities in a day.

OK Audrey....responding to a post that has been deleted. Feel free to post further questions here if the books don't contain the answers you need.

If you are departing from or through Naples the day after you visit the Archaeology Museum in Naples, it makes sense to stay overnight in Naples. If you have a hotel reservation for that night in Naples, leave your luggage there in the morning before you do your day 3.

We used Sorrento as a base in October for 4 days.
1. Combine Vesuvius with Pompeii. The bus stop for the run up Vesuvius is in front of the TI, 100 yards from the Pompeii train stop and 50 yards from the entrance to Pompeii. With an early start from Sorrento we had plenty of time to hike the last few hundred yards to the crater rim at Vesuvius, then back to tour Pompeii for the afternoon. And able to be back in Sorrento for dinner.
2. Since the only site we really wanted to see in Naples was the Archeology Museum, we took the hydrofoil from Sorrento to Naples. A pleasant ride followed by a half hour walk to the Musem...and avoided the famous pickpockets at the Naples train station. Don't forget your camera, non-flash photos are permitted in the museum and the mosaics, frescoes and statuary are incredible!
