We will be staying in the Amalfi Coast area for several days. We need to decide whether to overnight in Minori or Sorrento. We'll be taking day trips to Pompeii, Capri, Positano, etc. but returning each night to our hotel. We want to have plenty of dining and shopping options near our hotel and get an opportunity to experience our surroundings. Which town would be best to use as our home base --Sorrento or Minori, and why? Thank you!
Sorrento. It's bigger with many shops, restaurants etc. Also, the ferry goes from Sorrento to Capri and Positano. We were there in September. Minori is much smaller, but has an amazing pastry shop. There is a local train that goes from Sorrento to Pompei .as well.
With a car or without?
Without a car, Sorrento for sure.
With a car, then Minori can be an option.
Sorrento! We spent 4 nights in Sorrento last Oct . . . we loved it! We did day trips to Amalfi Coast and to Herculaneum. Some of the best meals we had in our 3 weeks in Italy were in Sorrento. We did not have a car, nor did we need one.
If you like fine pastries, you will want to be near Sal de Riso's shop in Minori. Gelateria in the back. Across the street from the tiny harbor.
Also, Minori is small, intimate, and actually on the Amalfi Coast.
The two towns are not comparable. If you had put your home area in your profile, I could give you a comparison. But, specific charm of one town aside, it's like comparing Dulwich and London as bases to see the major royal palaces. (I mean, including the ones that aren't in London.)
Dulwich is a quiet, pretty place. But staying there is an obstacle, not a help, in seeing multiple royal palaces. Staying in London is expensive and crowded. But it has its compensations, doesn't it?
I've stayed in both. Minori is small and quiet and you can catch the bus from there to other places on the Amalfi coast but will need to walk over to the town of Amalfi for the boats. All that also depends on what time of the year you will be visiting.
Actually that would be a long walk - I was thinking of Atrani sorry - but you can take the bus to Amalfi from Minori.
Ferries stop in Minori, every couple of hours.
I should have said that we will have transportation and a guide. I've been presented with the two towns as options for overnighting and just needed input on which offered the best for a home base. Sorry for the confusion.
