From our base in Sorrento, we did day trips to Pompeii, Amalfi/Positano, Nurano and also spent some time in Sorrento. We had a car and did well with help from locals. Id rent a guide in Pompeii for a few hours (get one at the door). If you have the $$$ you can also boat it over to Capri.
PS: Thanks for FAVRE!

Hi bob,

In my opinion I don't think you need to hire a tour guide. Most things you can do on your own. We went to Capri one day. It was very easy. Just go to the harbor and you buy a ticket for the boat (only like 35min ride). On Capri you can see the Blue Grotto, hike, or just stroll around.

I would also recommend taking the train to Pompeii (approx 40min train ride). We just used Rick Steves Walking tour of Pompeii and that worked great for us. It depends on how interested you are though in that sort of thing...there are also guides right outside Pompeii you can hire if you want that.

I would also recommend taking the bus along the Amalfi Coast. We went to Amalfi first. Then on the way back stopped in Positano. The bus ride in itself is an adventure.

I also have to recommend to you a FANTASTIC restaurant since you'll be in Sorrento. Ristorante Delfino was the best restaurant we ate in all of Italy. It's in the Marina Grande (far left if facing the ocean). They have wonderful seafood that they catch fresh daily and you can really tell. The owners there are just so friendly and joke around with everything. The owner Luisa is so kind...she gave me a charm for my necklace our final day we left with Mary & the cross on it. Very memorable experience.

Have a great trip!

We enjoyed a great all day excursion to Capri. Van picked us up at the hotel and drove us to the dock where we met our guide, hopped on the boat and enjoyed a great tour. Our group size was about 25 persons. I don't know what we paid but I don't think it was very expensive, contained real value for the money. A nice add on we enjoyed was a boat trip all the way around Capri. It was a great day to be on the water too, clear and calm sea.
