Sorrento Day Trip Suggestions!

Hi Fellow Travelers, We are staying 5 days in Rome, and then are planning to leave early AM on a Thursday and head south to Sorrento. Spend the whole day and overnight in Sorrento, and then head back and spend the next day (Friday) in Pompeii, before heading back to Rome. Given we'll have 24 hours in Sorrento (10:30am Thursday - 10:30am Friday), how can I make the best of this day/night trip?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I forgot to mention that we are staying at a friends house in Rome, not a Hotel so we can leave our suitcases behind and just bring backpacks. Planning to Airbnb in Sorrento. If my calculations are correct, we'd take the high speed train from Rome to Naples at 7:35am, get in to Naples and switch (same station) to the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and arrive by 10:30am. So with only backpacks we can do a lot that day and have a nice dinner & evening. There, we'd be only 30 min from Pompeii, so can head there later in the morning after a nice breakfast and early AM beach in Sorrento. Thoughts?

That's not a lot of time, but Sorrento Food Tours (you can see them on Tripadvisor & visit their website) might be a great intro to Sorrento. It starts in the morning and takes you on a Food tour thru Sorrento w/numerous stops/food tastings/lunch included. It's a great way to see Sorrento, taste some local food, learn some history - and then you'd have the rest of the day/evening to explore on your own. It may start before you arrive though, I just saw your times. With just a full day there, you can't go wrong just exploring the city/square/lemoncelllo stands - you could walk/bus/cab to the beach and have a great seafood meal.

Buses along the Amalfi Coast
Hop on a twice-hourly SITA bus from in front of the Sorrento train station to head to Positano (35–40 min.), continuing on to Amalfi (another 45–50 min.). From Amalfi, one bus per hour heads up to Ravello (20–30 min.). Be sure to snag a window seat on the right side of the bus for the best views.

You can get individual tickets (€1.40–€2.50 per leg), or buy a UnicoCostiera pass good for unlimited travel all along the Amalfi Coast (including Sorrento) that's good for 24 hours (€6) or 3 days (€15). For bus timetables, go directly to the SITA bus homepage (www.sitabus.it), click on "Linee Regionali," then on "Campania," then on "Orari Linee Campania."
