Sorrento: In town or on the via Capo? Massa Lubrense?

Two couples are searching for a hotel or apartment in or near Sorrento for 4 days in Fall, 2014. We'll have a car, and are open to staying in town or via Capo.

If we want a sea view, are we better off in town or via Capo? Massa Lubrense looks convenient and charming. Is it either or both?

We're looking for a place with great beauty and comfort, but not at too high a cost--no more than $200/160 Euros.

Many thanks!

For a great view you could check "Villa Monica B&B" ... I stayed there last February and loved everything about it! You may check out its reviews on tripadvisor I found them very accurate. Enjoy your planning!!

Rick's Italy book generally describes Sorrento town-center hotels as "overlooking city streets" versus Via Capo hotels as "cliffside, with sea-view balconies." That rings pretty true in my memory. View options are mentioned in the listings and you should also specifically ask for a balcony and/or view when booking.

You do not have to stay outside the town to get sea views. There are hotels with wonderful sea views in the town itself but they come at a price. The ones we like best are absoloute seafront eg Bellevue Syrene, Tramontano, Royal, Ambasciatori etc . There are also hotels in town that are a block or so back from the seafront with sea view rooms eg the Continental, La Favorita, De La Ville, Regina etc. How much time do you want to spend in your room? It is cheaper to book non sea view rooms in the seafront hotels and take advantage of the public terraces, lounges etc to enjoy the scenery. Depending on when you are going in the autumn, you may get a good deal. Prices drop during the period after the public holiday at the begining of November and the start of the Christmas period. However, car parking could prove expensive in town, some of the hotels do not have their own parking and others charge extra.

If you do want to stay in one of the outlying towns we prefer Sant' Agata (sui Due Golfi) to Massa. Neither is as quaint as Sorrento Old Town but are pleasant enough places. Sant' Agata has views over both the Bay of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno.
