I've read that much of Sorrento shuts down during the winter months. Tentatively have plans to use the town as a home base Nov 2-6. Will i still enjoy the town in early November? Has anyone been in this region at this time of year? Thoughts?
It gets quieter.... Weather is less dependably "nice," but we liked it even in December and plenty of restaurants were open. Pompeii is delightful in the offseason, especially if you can catch a sunny day. We were there when it was about 45 Fahrenheit and sunny with about 12 other people in the whole site.
I was in Sorrento in mid-February. Restaurants, shops (including those catering to tourists), hotels, cafes were all open. The elevator from the historic center down to the seashore was closed, so lots of stairs if you want to take the ferry to Capri (ferries to the Amalfi Coast stop running by the end of October), or even just walk along the shoreline. The buses to the Amalfi Coast and the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Naples will not be crowded.
That's great feedback, thank you.
We were in Sorrento for about the first five days of November two years ago. Liked it very much! From the ferry websites I had found, I thought they stopped running at the end of October, but we had no problem taking one to Capri. All the designer shops in Capri had closed for the season -- not a problem for me! -- but the harbor was lively and Ana Capri seemed to be only us and the locals. Positano had few beachgoers even though the day was beautiful. Ravello was very quiet but lovely. Weather was definitely cooler to do the Walk of the Gods. I saw a distinct difference from the last weekend of October when the official tourist season seemed to close, but early November was more peaceful with still plenty of options. After the horrendous ride in on the Circumvesuviana, we had planned to take the ferry back to Naples, but the day was too foggy to see any coastline, so some iffy weather can be a factor. I would go back then, but I also love winter travel in much of Europe.
