Sorrento in August

I am a single veteran traveler considering spending a week in Sorrento in August, 2014 (yes, I know it will be crowded) and from there making side trips to Capri, Pompeii, etc. I have travelled with Rick before (Italy, UK) and have his 2014 Amalfi Coast guidebook. I am planning to fly into Naples and then on to Sorrento by land or water. I have some specific questions:

  1. How would you suggest I get from the Naples to Sorrento - train, boat, or bus?

  2. Which 3-4 star hotels would you recommend in Sorrento (am considering Hotel Antiche Mura from Rick's book)?

3, I am considering spending 7 nights in Sorrento because hotels frequently give discounts for a week's stay. Please provide me with your experiences on the Amalfi Coast. Thanks. LB

  1. If you are flying into Naples the easiest, fastest and cheapest way is to take the Curreri Viaggi shuttle bus directly from the NAP airport to Sorrento.

  2. I usually stay in Positano, so I have no hotel suggestions in Sorrento. But others will chime in soon.

Sorrento is not technically on the Amalfi Coast, but Positano, Ravello, Amalfi etc. are a short SITA bus away from Sorrento. You will love the area. Outstandingly beautiful.

We really enjoyed our visit to Sorrento last month!

Yes, we found the easiest, no muss/no fuss way from Naples airport to Sorrento is the Curreri Viaggi bus (sort of a Greyhound type of bus). Just pick it up on the main street outside the airport (a 10-minute walk), pay onboard (10 Euro) and it drops you off right at the Sorrento train station. Journey takes about 1 hour, 15 minutes. Timetables, etc. can be looked up at www.curreriviaggi.it.

We stayed at the Hotel Rivage on Via Capo in Sorrento (80 Euro/night). Nice hotel, breakfast included, our room had a view/balcony, has a restaurant attached (convenient for drinks, but not the greatest food). It's slightly further down from all the action at Piazza Tasso (like, a 10-minute walk) and about a 15-minute walk from the train station. Great little markets nearby (for wine, snack and Coca Light), and plenty of restaurants and shops along the main drag.

Pompeii was super easy to get to on the Circumvesuviana train; we hiked down the "million" steps to the marina to take a hydrofoil over to Capri; and caught the standing-room-only SITA bus at the Sorrento train station over to Amalfi.
