staying in one of the hotels on the dramatic cliffs overlooking the sea is a wonderful place to be. We stayed in the Grand Hotel Ambasciatori which was a little on the expensive side, but the views were spectacular. It was our 2-night splurge.

I have reservations for five nights beginning October 8th at the Palazzo Starace. In addition to Rick, it got excellent reviews in tripadvisor and very good ones in venere.com. Depending on when you are going, I can let you know the latest scoop.

We've stayed at La Tonnarella, in RS book, on 2 trips and will return again next summer. We absolutely love this hotel. On the cliff above Sorrento but a short 10 min walk downhill to town (easy walk or bus back up). They have a wonderful restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating with views to die for. They have free internet, a nice lounge where we've met other traveler's and made some friends that we still stay in touch with. They have rooms with balconies that are worth the extra price. They also have a nice, private beach w/lounge chairs & umbrella's. Most of the people that work there are wonderful. They also have a great breakfast buffet. We love this hotel and I usually never recommend it because I don't want the price to go up or to be booked when we go.... I think any of RS recommendations would be good. We also absolutely love Sorrento! Have fun!

Sure, the super expensive places look fabulous...but I'm far too money conscious. Any great tips on CHEAP places that are fabulous? Apartments, private rooms in hostels, B&Bs? I'd love to experience this area AND not go broke!

We just got back from Sorrento and we stayed at the Casa Astorita. It was not very expensive and everyone was very nice and friendly. It was very clean, the beds were very comfortable. The breakfast was great with all kinds of bread and yogert, fruit, coffee, juice, water. As a matter of fact they give you a key to the kitchen so you can help yourself to the juice and water.
The one thing I strongly urge is that you get a room in the back. We had a room on the front and it was so noisy from the people on the street we had to put ear plugs in to sleep. (I'm a light sleeper, so I always carry earplugs when I travel) Sorrento closes it's main street down for traffic at night, but then the people walking up and down the street are up all night long.

The view is not great, but we only went there to sleep. The rest of the time we were out site seeing. We went to Pompei one day and took the bus to Amalfi the next.

I booked at Casa Astarita for 4 nights back in Feb; got a confirmation. When I e-mailed the first week of Sept to double-confirm, I got a reply saying that we had a room for the first 2 nights but not the last 2----VERY upsetting. I found this experince was fairly common on Trip Advisor. I've re-booked at Il Palazzo Starace. We leave in 6 days!!!!!

Staying at Casa Astarita now...lovely and this is third night. Convenient to train station for trips to Pompei (30-40 minutes) and Ercolano (another 15-20 minutes) to see ruins there or climb Vesuvius. Also close to catch bus for along Amalfi coast.

We just returned from Italy and absolutely love Sorrento! Can't wait to get back. We stayed at Hotel Minerva, recommended by Rick. We found it a good value for a splurge type hotel. The view was amazing, kind and helpful staff, included breakfast was plentiful and good, big bath and comfortable bed. It was more expensive than the Cinque Terre but not as pricey as Venice. One of the best meals we had in all of Italy was at Tratoria d'Emilia in Marina Grande, the little fishing village below Sorrento. Best splurge on our trip: we opted not to take a 45 minute gondola ride in Venice and, instead, for just a little more $, hired a private driver for the whole day through Rick's recommended Monetti tours to drive us all along the Amalfi coast. Have a lovely trip!
