Sorrento hotels: Minerva, La Tonnarella, or Settima Cielo?

Ok, I know there are so many opinions out there on these 3 Sorrento hotels (because I've read about a million reviews here and on TripAdvisor about all of them!) We are honeymooning in Europe and start off our trip in Sorrento on 17 June, for 4 nights, and we have narrowed it down to these 3 hotels. Now we need help choosing! We want romantic and are willing to spend the money required for the famous Via Capo views. Rick says his favorite splurge is Hotel Minerva, but (at least from the website), La Tonnarella looks pretty amazing, too. And Settima Cielo seems to pop up consistently as one of the best-rated. So how to choose? Which has the best: Rooms (want balcony views) Beach Pool Restaurants Service Travel into town options (though the walk looks ok) Tourist info Whatever else we should consider Thanks for your feedback! One vote for La Tonnarella. Disclaimer: it's the only one of your 3 that we've actually stayed at. It has all that you want except (if memory serves) no pool. They do have access to a small beach. We liked it a lot; we'd stay there again.

We've been to Sorrento 3 times, love it, and have stayed at La Tonnarella all 3 times. We really like this hotel. But, as Tom said, we haven't stayed at the other hotels. If you can get a room with a balcony, you will be in heaven. The views are unbelievable everywhere in Sorrento, but even more so from your own private balcony (they are very big). I don't know what your idea of a nice room is, and some are nicer than others, but we liked every room we stayed in. They are very clean, and the beds comfortable. They have a/c and new in '08 computers w/free internet in every room. They have a really good restaurant and even locals come there to eat. You can eat outside on a beautiful terrace in good weather, the breakfast buffet is really good and served in their large indoor dining room that has huge windows with the amazing views of the Bay of Naples. They have several charming terraces, lots of flowers, tile work, statues. It's a charming, welcoming, friendly hotel. We like their beach a lot. It's not big, but not tiny either. They have nice lounge chairs, umbrellas, beach toys for kids, ping pong, and you can order food from their restaurant while you're at the beach. True, there's no pool, but for us, it was a thrill to be able to swim in the Mediterranean. We can swim in a pool anywhere. We also bought tubes in town and sat in those in the water, very fun and very relaxing. It's a very easy, very beautiful walk downhill from the hotel to town. And it's easy going back up as well - takes maybe 10 min going up. You can also take a city bus to/from if you'd like, which stops right by the hotel. I highly recommend La Tonnarella, but wherever you stay, I hope you have a great time!

We've stayed at both Settima and Minerva. Minerva is more upscale with a pool that has beautiful views and full sun. Settima has a smaller often shady pool with views too. Unless Minerva's rooms were upgraded I prefer Settima's and Settima has many small balcony rooms (but big enough for a table and chairs and great views). Minerva has bigger balconies but they are more costly and harder to get. Settima's breakfast room has nice views but the breakfast is not great. Minerva has better service and food but it is not outstanding. Both have nice customer service and they are across the street from each other but Settima is on the downside resulting in more shade. We paid cash and got a great value at Settima. As it's your honeymoon I will mention one of the most romantic places ever, Bellavue Syrene. We were walking up the path from the cove below and ended up at this magical hotel. The terrace is so beautiful and we came back for evening cocktails watching the sun set across the water with sailboats and island view. Lovely service, drinks and snacks. They also had a full view room with a piano player and a lower deck serving dinner. I could not afford to sleep there but I did ask a guest and she said it is wonderful with spa service. Absolutely beautiful. Have fun

Thanks for the replies, all! Anyone else have a vote for one of these 3? Minerva doesn't have beach access, right? As for Settima, it did look very shady and just a bit less upscale than the other two not a huge deal, but the price is so comparable to La Tonnarella that it seems of the two, La Tonnarella is probably nicer/a better deal...? I think I'm leaning toward La Tonnarella at this point. I like that it's got beach access and that the restaurant is well-reviewed. Has anyone stayed in their Superior or Deluxe rooms? Looks like the only main difference is that the Deluxe has a Sea View Terrace and the Superior only has a "sea view" (maybe some of those rooms don't have balconies?) Also, thanks for bringing up the Bellevue Syrene I know I said we were willing to pay for views but this is unfortunately out of our price range. BUT good to know it's a great place for a cocktail it looks so beautiful!!

My vote is for Settimo Cielo! I am not sure of the other hotels so can't say they aren't as good, but I can say that I loved every minute of being at Settimo Cielo. I will admit that the bulk of it lies in the fact that it was my first time at the Amalfi Coast and the whole experience was amazing, but the hotel definately contributed to that. Nice breakfast. Breathtaking views. Good sized rooms and good sized bathrooms. he staff was the nicest and friendliest and most hospitable that came across during the entire trip in Italy. The ONLY downside would be it's location in reference to getting up and down into the Sorreto center. But other than that, I can't sing that hotel's praises enough.

I don't know how warm it will be mid June but we aren't used to the humidity and it was HOT during our early July visit. The pool saved us. We are a bit leary swimming in the sea as my husband got bitten badly by a huge jellyfish in Positano last visit. The water also had a thin layer of oil on it. That said we had a great four-hour splurge when we hired a small boat and driver in Capri and circled the island. We would jump in and swim in the beautiful water including in some small grottoes. The ferry ride to Positano is very fun too and follow the children to the best lemon granita stands. Oh and the walk up the hill to Via Capo is fine. There is a small grocery store at the base where you can pick up food and wine to enjoy on your terrace. You may want a taxi from the train station when you first arrive with the luggage though

I stayed at Hotel Minerva in October 2010. We had a room with a balcony and it was amazing. As a result, I reserved rooms in July 2012 when my sister and her family came to visit us in Europe and it was a disaster!!! Although they confirmed sea view rooms (I wanted balconies and had told them what room we had previously), when we arrived they did not have the rooms promised. When I protested, they said we would have to talk to the manager (who wasn't in, conveniently). The manager was actually argumentative and wouldn't let me finish a sentence. They finally put one in a "sea view" room that had a window the size of a port hole! I was so disappointed and upset as it basically ruined the trip. Then I got yelled at by the pool attendant for putting sunscreen on my kids!!! Go somewhere else!
