Sorrento: hotels and motor bikes

Hi again: you're all so helpfull!! Today's question is Sorrento. I'm thinking about an excursion there for a couple of nights. Does anyone have a recommended hotel (that's not too expensive)? Also has anyone rented scooters or motorbikes to drive along the coast? If yes, what did you think of it?

Thanks,

Kay

I have had a motorcycle license for 40 years and unless you are an experienced biker, I'd say "Take the bus". Between the curves, the drivers (including bus drivers) who pass on curves better left alone and narrow roads just wide enough for two vehicles but with two passing each other with a third parked on the edge, you need to really know what you are doing.

And the cyclists? They pass between the two passing cars! (Well, almost)

Your question about renting a scooter or motorbike in Italy has been discussed here several times in the last year. The voting here has been about 90% against doing it, based on safety and stress. Many American travelers who have been on this stretch of road (ask John, above post) know why the feeling here has been to approach this with caution, something you would not think twice about doing in some other parts of the world. Even if you are an experienced biker, if you have not seen the way people drive on that road, wait until you get there and then decide for yourself. You don't want to be blind-sided by safety issues on your vacation.

Not a biker but I agree with the two previous posters. The bus is much less stressful.
I recommend the Il Nido hotel, excellent accomodation, about 80 Euros last fall. Convenient shuttle from/to the train plus scheduled shuttle buses during the day and evening.
There is a spectacular view of the Bay of Naples and Mount V.

I had never been on any sort of motorbike before and did just fine on the coast...just go really slow :-) there are a few different scooter rental places in Sorrento and it's really very popular. The cars and busses are used to it. (but plan on taking at least twice as long to get there on a scooter!) We did Positano and Amalfi and Ravello as a day-tip by scooter..it was really fun.
